Job Description

An experienced Site Electrical Test Engineer is required to support on-site testing, commissioning, and maintenance of transformers and associated equipment. This is a site-based role involving regular UK travel and occasional overseas work.

Key Responsibilities

\n
    \n
  • Lead on-site transformer testing, commissioning, and fault diagnosis
  • \n
  • Carry out planned maintenance, repairs, and performance optimisation
  • \n
  • Ensure full compliance with RAMS, Health & Safety, and site regulations
  • \n
  • Accurately complete test documentation, reports, and certification
  • \n
  • Represent the business professionally on customer sites
  • \n
  • Travel across the UK and internationally as required
  • \n
\n

Testing & Commissioning

\n
    \n
  • Perform electrical testing including:\n
      \n
    • Insulation Resistance, HV/Applied Voltage, and HV Withstand
    • \n
    • Transformer Ratio, Winding Resistance & SFRA
    • \n
    • HV/LV CT testing and vector group verification
    • \n
    • Bushing testing (Tan Delta) and tapchanger checks
    • \n
  • \n
  • Conduct protection and functional testing:\n
      \n
    • Relays (Buchholz, Oil Surge, Rupture Detector)
    • \n
    • OTI/WTI calibration and auxiliary equipment (PRDs, gauges, breathers)
    • \n
  • \n
  • Complete system checks:\n
      \n
    • Cooling systems, marshalling boxes, and control wiring
    • \n
    • Oil sampling/analysis, impact recorder reviews, Ashridge setup
    • \n
  • \n
\n

Installation & Assembly

\n
    \n
  • Carry out mechanical installation of transformers and components:\n
      \n
    • Radiators, conservators, cooling systems
    • \n
    • Bushings, tap changers, gaskets, seals
    • \n
  • \n
  • Complete electrical installation work:\n
      \n
    • Wiring, termination, and control/protection systems
    • \n
    • Marshalling boxes and cable systems
    • \n
  • \n
  • Perform functional checks on alarms, trips, and protection systems
  • \n
\n

Maintenance & Refurbishment

\n
    \n
  • Support oil management (draining, filling, filtration, sampling)
  • \n
  • Replace and upgrade gaskets, seals, and transformer accessories
  • \n
  • Inspect and maintain transformer components to ensure reliability
  • \n
\n

Site Safety & Operational Excellence

\n
    \n
  • Establish safe working areas, barriers, and lifting operations
  • \n
  • Operate lifting and rigging equipment safely
  • \n
  • Identify and report hazards, incidents, and near misses
  • \n
  • Interpret technical drawings and schematics to guide work
  • \n
\n

  • Proven experience in electrical testing within engineering environments

  • Strong background in transformer testing and commissioning
  • \n
  • Experience in site-based/live environments
  • \n
  • Relevant electrical qualifications and regulatory knowledge
  • \n
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and schematics
  • \n
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety practices
  • \n
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently
  • \n
  • Flexible with travel requirements
  • \n
