Protection & Controls Engineer (Design)\n
\n Location: Bristol - Hybrid\n
\n Reporting to: Lead Protection Engineer / Engineering Manager / Chief Engineer\n
\n Role Overview\n
\n We are seeking a Protection & Controls Engineer (Design) to deliver front-end and detailed desktop design of protection and control systems for UK electricity networks, including DNO and National Grid assets.\n
\n The role focuses purely on design and technical assurance, no site, commissioning, SCADA, or operational control responsibilities.\n
\n Key Responsibilities\n
\n Develop protection philosophies in line with DNO / National Grid requirements\n
\n Design and coordinate HV and EHV protection schemes\n
\n Carry out fault level calculations, protection grading, and selectivity studies\n
\n Apply protection schemes for transformers, feeders, busbars, generators, and cables\n
\n Produce and review protection design documentation, including:\n
\n Single line and protection single line diagrams\n
\n Protection and control schematics\n
\n Calculation and philosophy reports\n
\n Ensure compliance with ENA Engineering Recommendations, National Grid specs, and IEC/IEEE standards\n
\n Support design reviews, technical assurance, and supplier submission reviews\n
\n Skills & Experience\n
\n Strong experience with HV / EHV protection systems\n
\n Knowledge of modern protection relays (ABB, Siemens, SEL, GE, Schneider)\n
\n Experience producing high-quality, auditable design documentation\n
\n Background working on UK DNO and/or National Grid projects (essential)\n
\n Qualifications\n
\n Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent\n
\n Typically 3–7 years' experience in protection & controls design\n
\n CEng or working towards IET chartership desirable\n
\n Ideal for engineers who enjoy detailed protection design in a regulated UK power systems environment.\n
