Overview
\nAs a Principal Safety Engineer, you will provide a service to Plant/Project Managers, specialist knowledge, support and advice as necessary, to enable them to comply with statutory legislation and requirements as defined in the Licence Conditions/Authorisation Conditions (LC/AC) relevant to nuclear related activities carried out by, or on behalf of the Plant/Project Manager. This post lies within the Nuclear Safety Engineering team.
\nKey Responsibilities

- To direct the development of safety strategy and its implementation \n
- Manage a team of professional safety staff: \n
- Support the development, implementation and maintenance of development and succession plans for the team and individual team members. \n
- Ensure that each team member has objectives which align with broader business objectives and ensure that they are reviewed on a regular basis. \n
- Ensure that appraisals for staff members are conducted on time as appropriate. Provide appropriate follow up throughout the year. \n
- Lead through example by maintaining personal and company standards at all times. \n
- To identify the need for remedial action or additional technical/safety justifications and agree with the DSM or P/SE the programme of work to be carried out. \n

- To support other areas of the company by providing a quality check service to an agreed scope or area of expertise. \n
- To be able to manage the construction, delivery and quality checking of appropriate Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation against an agreed Safety Strategy utilising the Safety Engineering techniques as defined by the following processes and in accordance with agreed standards as determined by relevant legislation associated compliance documents and company guidance:\n

- To ensure that any documentation produced covers the scope of operations, as defined by line management and agreed with relevant stakeholders, to timescales and standards that will allow continued operations. This will involve liaison as appropriate with P/SE, DSMs, Plant/Project Managers and any other relevant stakeholders (customer). \n
- \n
- To provide advice to the Plant/Project Manager on the implementation and maintenance of safety cases and the implementation of LC/AC. \n
- \n
- Provide guidance and advice to support Plant/Project Managers, P/SE, DSMs and the Head of Safety Engineering on Safety Case, Site Licence and MoD \n
- Authorisation issues, and to liaise with ONR, MoD, SRD/RSD, RRMP as appropriate. \n
Essential Requirements
\nTechnical:
\nExperienced in all appropriate aspects of the management and preparation of all appropriate categories of safety documentation for a nuclear installation.
\nExperience managing engineering projects.
\nTo have practical experience, a good understanding and be able to apply/lead a team to deliver as necessary:

- Safety Strategies and supporting techniques including but not limited to: \n
- Categorisation of safety assessment and determination of nuclear safety significance. \n
- Hazard Identification and Sentencing techniques including but not limited to: \n
- HAZID Techniques \n
- CHL Production \n
- Hazard Sentencing \n
- Safety Assessment techniques including but not limited to: \n
- Normal Operational Dose Assessment \n
- Fault sequence development using IRA, DSA, SAA and PSA. \n
- Determination of Facility/Operational Limits and Conditions and Safety Functional Requirements. \n
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
\nAcademic:
\nA degree in a relevant Engineering/Science discipline or equivalent qualification/experience.
\nRegistered professional (or the ability to achieve professional status).
\nNuclear:
\nNuclear Familiarisation Course (NFC) Module 1 (Course Code NUC0793)
\nPlant Familiarisation Course (PFC) Module 2 (Course Code NUC0794)
\nNuclear Practitioners Course (NFC) Module 3 (Course Code NUC0795) as necessary
\nNuclear Practitioners Course (NFC) Module 4 (Course Code NUC0796) as necessary
\nIntroduction to Safety Engineering (Course Code NUC0911)
\nSafety Engineering Technical Fundamentals (Course Code NUC0912)
\nHAZID/HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis etc. as necessary
