Job Title: Medical Director, School-Based Health Centers

Grade: Faculty

Reports to: Division Chief, Adolescent Medicine

Primary Purpose:

The Medical Director for the School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) will oversee the operations of the SBHC program and collaborate closely with the Deputy Medical Directors to ensure that medical services align with our mission, strategic goals, and operational framework.

This role involves directing the activities of both medical and mental health staff, ensuring that services are provided in accordance with our policies, New York State regulations, funder guidelines, and established best practices in adolescent medicine. Together with the Deputy Medical Directors, the SBHC Medical Director will establish, approve, and implement policies governing medical services within the School-Based Health Centers.

Responsibilities:

Direct Patient Care

  • Provide outpatient care at SBHCs and MSAHC, along with inpatient coverage at our facilities.
  • Offer support to school-based health center physicians and mid-level practitioners during staff absences.

Administrative Duties

In partnership with the Deputy Medical Directors, ensure the effective and efficient operation of the SBHCs, fostering an integrated interdisciplinary service model. Promote a patient-centered culture where students receive competent, compassionate care, and staff feel valued, respected, and empowered to excel in their roles.

Supervision, Evaluation, and Collaboration

  • Oversee the development, management, and evaluation of the SBHC medical practice, including key positions such as:
    • SBHC physicians and mid-level practitioners
    • SBHC practice manager, in collaboration with the Operations Director, and assume practice manager duties if the position is vacant
  • Conduct annual evaluations of provider performance, perform semiannual OPPE for all clinical staff, and regularly review charts for informal performance assessments.
  • Work with Deputy Medical Directors to develop and implement necessary changes to medical care protocols in line with adolescent health standards.
  • Establish quality assurance measures and monitor the quality of medical services.
  • Advocate for SBHC providers in program development, policy formulation, staff development, and address any challenges they face in fulfilling their responsibilities.
  • Implement systems to track the timeliness and communication of all specialty referrals.
  • Collaborate with:
    • The social work supervisor to enhance mental health service delivery.
    • The research team to evaluate and share practice-based outcomes and program evaluations.
    • The Fellowship Program Director to provide teaching and mentorship to faculty, fellows, residents, and staff at both SBHC and MSAHC.
    • The NYC Department of Health in evaluating and managing program activities.
    • The health education supervisor to improve health education services in the SBHC.

Qualifications:

  • MD Degree with Board Certification in Adolescent Medicine.
  • Preferred minimum of 5 years of combined clinical and administrative experience.
  • Dedication to our mission and vision, fostering a collaborative and multidisciplinary patient-centered culture.
  • Strong commitment to working with youth and prioritizing the needs of each patient.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach, partnering effectively with the Medical Director.
  • Understanding of managed care and healthcare financing.

  • Exceptional management capabilities with a focus on mentoring, recruiting, and retaining a diverse team.

Compensation ranges from $175,000 to $190,000 (excluding bonuses, incentive compensation, or benefits).

Actual salaries may vary based on factors such as experience, specialties, historical productivity, and community needs. Therefore, actual salaries may be closer to either end of the range or, in some cases, outside the listed range.
