The Greater Manchester Region employs around 2,500 individuals and encompasses Manchester Memorial Hospital, a community hospital with 249 beds, Rockville General, a 102-bed facility that is part of Manchester Memorial Hospital, a large multispecialty provider group, and visiting nurse services. This region caters to approximately 300,000 residents across 19 towns.

Position Overview

The role involves assisting the surgeon during surgical and invasive procedures, ensuring the operating room is properly prepared, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, and helping to maintain a safe and clean environment. This position reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Completion of a nationally accredited Surgical Technology program and possession of a Surgical Technologist Certification from a recognized national certifying body, such as the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (CST) or the National Center for Competency Testing (TS-C).

  • Candidates who have completed an accredited Surgical Technologist program but do not hold current certification must obtain it within 90 days of hire from a recognized national certifying body.

  • Surgical Technicians who have worked in this capacity on or before October 1, 2023, may be eligible for grandfathering under CT Public Act 23-195.

  • Certification must be maintained while employed in this position.

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required upon hire or must be obtained during the introductory orientation period, with ongoing clinical competency maintained throughout employment.

Competencies:

  • Effective communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are essential.

  • Basic computer proficiency is required.

  1. Provide comprehensive patient care in a manner that prioritizes safety and promotes positive outcomes.

  2. Adhere to the five rights of medication administration to minimize errors and comply with Surgical Services policies regarding medication safety.

  3. Exhibit flexibility, organization, and the ability to perform under pressure, utilizing critical thinking and sound judgment in prioritization and delegation.

  4. Demonstrate independent practice aligned with evidence-based standards, while pursuing personal and professional development and serving as a mentor.

  5. Understand the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and provide age-appropriate care to patients.

  6. Efficiently perform the scrub role during surgical and invasive procedures under the guidance of a registered nurse.

  7. Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure efficient room turnover, including cleaning and preparing for subsequent procedures.

  8. Work with the registered nurse to ensure proper identification, handling, and processing of specimens.

  9. Maintain aseptic technique throughout surgical procedures, identifying and addressing any breaches in technique.

  10. Communicate clearly and effectively with the team leader, colleagues, and other healthcare team members.
