Primary - Sen Teaching Assistant

Purpose of the Role

To provide high-quality support to pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), helping them to access learning and achieve their full potential. The role will involve supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and behavioural needs, whilst also contributing to pupil welfare through lunchtime supervision responsibilities.

The successful candidate will primarily work across Upper Key Stage 2, although flexibility will be required to provide occasional support in other year groups as directed by the school.

Essential Experience and Skills

• Experience supporting children with SEND, including:\n
  \n
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
  \n
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  \n
  • Behavioural and emotional regulation needs.
  \n
\n
• Experience working with children in a primary school environment.
\n
• Experience implementing positive behaviour management strategies.
\n
• Experience undertaking a welfare/lunchtime supervisory role, with responsibility for pupil welfare, wellbeing and behaviour.
\n
• Ability to build effective, positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents/carers.
\n
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
\n
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and use initiative when required.
\n
• Understanding of inclusion and strategies to support pupils with additional needs.
\n
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.
\n

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

\n
• Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (Level 2 or equivalent).
\n
• Experience working within Upper Key Stage 2.
\n
• Training related to SEND, SEMH, ASD or behaviour support.
\n
• First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake training.
\n

Key Responsibilities

Pupil Support

\n
• Support pupils individually and in small groups to access learning activities.
\n
• Assist teachers in delivering lessons and adapting resources where necessary.
\n
• Promote pupils' independence, confidence and engagement in learning.
\n
• Support pupils with SEND, SEMH, ASD and behavioural needs using agreed strategies and interventions.
\n
• Contribute to the implementation of individual support plans and behaviour plans.
\n

Classroom Support

\n
• Prepare learning resources and classroom materials.
\n
• Monitor and record pupil progress as directed by teaching staff.
\n
• Support the creation of a positive, inclusive and stimulating learning environment.
\n
• Provide occasional support across other classes and key stages when required.
\n

The successful candidate will:

• Demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
\n
• Maintain vigilance and proactively safeguard pupils at all times.
\n
• Report any concerns regarding the safety or welfare of a child immediately in line with school safeguarding procedures.
\n
• Work in accordance with statutory safeguarding guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
\n
• Maintain professional boundaries and uphold the highest standards of conduct.
\n
• Participate in safeguarding, child protection and relevant statutory training as required.
\n
• Promote a culture where pupils feel safe, valued and respected.
\n
