Primary - Teaching Assistant
Job Description
I am currently working with a fantastic Primary school based in the South lakes area. The school are looking to appoint a qualified and experienced teaching assistant to join them in September. The role will be working Monday to Friday in a mixed year 5/6 class. The role is supporting 4 students with full time EHCP plans along with 2 very experienced Support assistants.
\n\nPurpose of the Role
\nTo provide dedicated 1:1 support for a named pupil within a mixed Year 5/6 class, enabling them to access the curriculum, develop independence, and achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
\nKey Responsibilities
\nPupil Support
\n- \n
- Work on a 1:1 basis with a specific pupil, supporting learning in line with the class teacher’s plans and EHCP (if applicable). \n
- Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil’s individual needs. \n
- Support the pupil in developing independence, confidence, and self-esteem. \n
- Assist with emotional regulation and behaviour management in line with school policies. \n
- Monitor and record progress, providing feedback to the class teacher and SENDCo. \n
Classroom Support
\n- \n
- Support the class teacher in delivering high-quality teaching and learning. \n
- Help prepare resources and learning materials tailored to the pupil’s needs. \n
- Assist in small group work where appropriate. \n
- Promote inclusion by supporting the pupil’s participation in whole-class activities. \n
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support
\n- \n
- Implement strategies outlined in the pupil’s EHCP, IEP, or support plans. \n
- Work closely with the SENDCo and external professionals (e.g., speech and language therapists). \n
- Support the pupil with additional needs such as:\n
- \n
- ASD / ADHD \n
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) \n
- Learning difficulties \n
\n - Use appropriate strategies such as visual supports, sensory breaks, or structured routines. \n
Behaviour & Safeguarding
\n- \n
- Promote positive behaviour and follow the school’s behaviour policy. \n
- Be vigilant in safeguarding and child protection, reporting concerns immediately. \n
- Ensure a safe and supportive learning environment at all times. \n
Communication
\n- \n
- Liaise regularly with the class teacher, SENDCo, and other staff. \n
- Provide feedback on pupil progress and wellbeing. \n
- Contribute to review meetings where required. \n
Person Specification
\nEssential Skills & Experience
\n- \n
- Experience working with primary-aged children, ideally in KS2. \n
- Understanding of supporting pupils with SEN. \n
- Good communication and interpersonal skills. \n
- Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff. \n
- Patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach. \n
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team. \n
Desirable
\n- \n
- Experience working 1:1 with a child with additional needs. \n
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures. \n
- Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant). \n
- Experience with behaviour support strategies or interventions. \n
