Maintenance Technician / Site Manager
Reports To \nHeadteacher / School Business Manager
Job Purpose\nThe Maintenance Technician / Site Manager is responsible for ensuring that the school site, buildings, and grounds are safe, secure, clean, well-maintained, and fully operational. The post holder will oversee the day-to-day maintenance of the premises, coordinate contractors, ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, and provide a welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.
Key ResponsibilitiesSite Maintenance\n- \n
- Carry out routine inspections of school buildings, grounds, and equipment. \n
- Perform general maintenance and repairs, including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, decorating, and minor electrical work where competent. \n
- Identify maintenance issues and arrange repairs where specialist contractors are required. \n
- Maintain heating, lighting, ventilation, and water systems to ensure efficient operation. \n
- Ensure all school facilities are maintained to a high standard. \n
- \n
- Ensure the school complies with all relevant health and safety legislation. \n
- Conduct regular health and safety inspections and risk assessments. \n
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and statutory compliance. \n
- Monitor fire safety systems, emergency lighting, fire alarms, extinguishers, and evacuation procedures. \n
- Respond promptly to emergencies, including security incidents and building-related issues. \n
- \n
- Open and secure the school buildings each day according to agreed schedules. \n
- Lock and unlock premises for staff, contractors, and community users. \n
- Monitor site security, alarms, CCTV (where applicable), and access control systems. \n
- Respond to alarm activations and security concerns when required. \n
- \n
- Maintain school grounds to provide a safe and attractive environment. \n
- Arrange or undertake grass cutting, hedge trimming, litter removal, leaf clearance, and gritting during icy conditions. \n
- Ensure pathways, car parks, and play areas remain safe throughout the year. \n
- \n
- Coordinate and supervise contractors working on site. \n
- Ensure contractors comply with safeguarding procedures and health and safety requirements. \n
- Obtain quotations where required and monitor the quality of completed work. \n
- \n
- Manage waste disposal and recycling arrangements. \n
- Monitor stock levels of maintenance supplies and cleaning materials. \n
- Assist with room setups for assemblies, examinations, performances, and school events. \n
- Support lettings and out-of-hours use of school facilities where applicable. \n
- \n
- Ensure statutory inspections are completed, including:\n
- \n
- Fire safety equipment \n
- Emergency lighting \n
- Legionella control \n
- Asbestos management \n
- Electrical testing \n
- Gas safety \n
- Lifting equipment (where applicable) \n
\n - Maintain accurate maintenance logs and compliance records. \n
- \n
- Assist with planning and monitoring the premises maintenance budget. \n
- Source cost-effective repairs, materials, and services. \n
- Recommend improvements to buildings and facilities. \n
- \n
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people. \n
- Follow all school safeguarding policies and procedures. \n
- Report any safeguarding concerns immediately in line with school policy. \n
- \n
- Act as a key holder and attend the school outside normal working hours when required. \n
- Provide excellent customer service to staff, pupils, parents, visitors, and contractors. \n
- Attend training as required. \n
- Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role as requested by the Headteacher or School Business Manager. \n

- Good standard of general education (GCSEs or equivalent). \n
- Relevant maintenance, building services, or facilities management qualification, or equivalent experience. \n
- Health and Safety qualification (or willingness to obtain). \n
