Pediatric Cardiologist - Heart Transplant and Advanced Heart Failure

Position Overview

Announcement: Our organization is currently looking to recruit up to two full-time faculty members to become part of the Advanced Heart Failure - Cardiac Transplant Team. Positions are available at the Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor level in Clinical Pediatrics and Child Health. The program conducts approximately 12-15 heart transplants each year, manages heart failure patients in both inpatient and outpatient environments, and operates a mechanical circulatory support program that includes a comprehensive range of pediatric and adult devices. The selected candidates will collaborate with our heart transplant team, which comprises three physicians, five nurse practitioner transplant coordinators, a dedicated VAD coordinator, and interdisciplinary professionals in nutrition, pharmacy, social work, and child psychology. Applicants must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree, be board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, and be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona. Candidates should have completed a three-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology, along with an additional year of advanced subspecialty training in pediatric advanced heart failure, which includes managing cardiac transplant patients and mechanical circulatory support.

We seek candidates who exhibit a strong academic focus, ideally in clinical and/or translational research, although opportunities in basic science are also available. Academic clinical faculty appointments will be arranged at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix and Tucson, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine - Scottsdale. There are also collaborative research opportunities with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (tGen) and the Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University.

The Division of Cardiology currently runs a fellowship training program in general pediatric cardiology, accommodating nine fellows over three years. Additionally, the Center for Heart Care offers subspecialty fellowships in pediatric cardiac critical care, advanced cardiac imaging, and interventional cardiac catheterization. The inpatient service includes a 48-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit and a transition care unit. Patient care is interdisciplinary, involving transplant cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and dedicated cardiac nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The role includes providing both workplace-based and didactic education to fellows, residents, medical students, and nursing staff. The successful candidates will join a team of 24 cardiologists, 13 cardiac intensivists, three cardiovascular surgeons, and 25 advanced practice providers. Inpatient pediatric cardiac care is primarily conducted at our hospital, while adult congenital inpatient care and procedures are also available at a nearby medical center. Ambulatory cardiac services for transplant and heart failure patients are centered at the Center for Heart Care - Thomas Campus.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Care Services

  • Deliver patient care services for which the physician is clinically privileged, including but not limited to:
    • Providing direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings
    • Offering subspecialty consultations and follow-up care
    • Conducting diagnostic and therapeutic services/procedures
    • Delivering urgent/emergent care as necessary
  • Aim to provide the highest quality of patient and family-centered care
  • Support the hospital's patient satisfaction objectives as well as specific division targets
  • Adhere to divisional standards for patient safety and quality of care
  • Practice contemporary evidence-based medicine or the latest experience-based approaches

    • Supervising trainees and allied healthcare professionals in delivering inpatient and outpatient services when applicable

    • Participating in the education and supervision of trainees and allied healthcare professionals assigned to the division
    • Engaging in postgraduate continuing education activities of the division
  • Support the division's research initiatives, including those led by other members
