Pediatric Cardiologist - Heart Transplant and Advanced Heart Failure

Position Overview

We are currently looking for up to two full-time faculty members to join our Advanced Heart Failure - Cardiac Transplant Team at the level of Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Child Health. Our program conducts approximately 12-15 heart transplants each year, manages heart failure patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and operates a mechanical circulatory support program that includes a comprehensive range of pediatric and adult devices.

The successful candidates will become part of a dedicated heart transplant team, which includes three physicians, five nurse practitioner transplant coordinators, a specialized VAD coordinator, and interdisciplinary professionals in nutrition, pharmacy, social work, and child psychology. Applicants must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree, be board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, and be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona. Candidates should have completed a three-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology, along with an additional year of advanced subspecialty training in pediatric advanced heart failure, focusing on the management of cardiac transplant patients and mechanical circulatory support.

Academic and Research Opportunities

We seek candidates who exhibit a strong academic focus, ideally in clinical and/or translational research, although opportunities in basic science are also available. Academic clinical faculty appointments will be supported at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix and Tucson, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine - Scottsdale. Collaborative research opportunities are also available with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (tGen) and the Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University.

Fellowship and Training Programs

The Division of Cardiology currently offers a fellowship training program in general pediatric cardiology, accommodating nine fellows over three years. Additionally, the Phoenix Children's Center for Heart Care provides subspecialty fellowships in pediatric cardiac critical care, advanced cardiac imaging, and interventional cardiac catheterization. Our inpatient services include a 48-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit and a transition care unit. Patient care is interdisciplinary, involving transplant cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and dedicated cardiac nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The role includes providing both workplace-based and didactic education to fellows, residents, medical students, and nursing staff.

The successful candidates will join a team of 24 cardiologists, 13 cardiac intensivists, three cardiovascular surgeons, and 25 advanced practice providers. Inpatient pediatric cardiac care is primarily conducted at our facility, while adult congenital inpatient care and procedures are also available at a nearby medical center. Ambulatory cardiac services for transplant and heart failure patients are centered at the Center for Heart Care - Thomas Campus.
