Position OverviewThe Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer is a specialized diagnostic imaging expert focused on advanced obstetric ultrasound. This role involves collaborating with MFM physicians, perinatologists, genetic counselors, and various care teams to conduct comprehensive fetal and maternal imaging, essential for diagnosing, monitoring, and managing high-risk pregnancies.
To excel in this position, candidates must demonstrate advanced skills in fetal anatomy scanning, Doppler studies, and specialized procedures. Strong clinical judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and a compassionate approach to patient care are crucial. The MFM Sonographer significantly contributes to enhancing maternal and fetal health outcomes through precise imaging, thorough documentation, and effective communication with both providers and patients.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct advanced obstetric ultrasound examinations, including detailed fetal anatomy scans across all trimesters.
- Perform specialized MFM studies such as nuchal translucency measurements, fetal echocardiography, biophysical profiles, cervical length assessments, growth scans, and Doppler evaluations (umbilical artery, MCA, ductus venosus, uterine artery).
- Assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures, including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), fetal blood sampling, and other invasive diagnostic or therapeutic interventions.
- Accurately document and analyze sonographic findings in line with MFM protocols and established guidelines (e.g., AIUM/ACOG standards).
- Identify and promptly report abnormal findings, fetal anomalies, and maternal complications to the interpreting physician.
- Maintain detailed and timely electronic medical records and manage image archiving within PACS systems.
- Ensure patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality during all procedures while providing compassionate support to patients facing high-risk pregnancies.
- Educate patients about exam procedures, address inquiries within the scope of practice, and offer emotional reassurance during complex evaluations.
- Conduct routine quality assurance checks on ultrasound equipment and ensure proper care of transducers and imaging systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including MFM physicians, OB/GYN providers, nurses, and genetic counselors, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Stay updated on best practices, emerging technologies, and continuing education in Maternal Fetal Medicine imaging.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Ultrasound Technologist or Diagnostic Medical Sonographer program.
- Licensure/Certification: Registered as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Vascular Technologist (RVT), or Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or certified in Sonography (S) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). State licensure as required. Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification is also necessary.
- Experience: No prior experience is required.
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer must be obtained before the start date, and the certification must remain valid for at least sixty days post-hire.
