Your new companyOn behalf of Birmingham City Council, we are recruiting a Trading Standards Technical Assistant to join the Trading Standards team based in Aston. This is an exciting opportunity to support vital regulatory and enforcement activities that help protect consumers and businesses across Birmingham. Working within a busy and professional environment, you will play an important role in supporting Trading Standards Officers with both administrative and operational duties.
\nYour new roleThis is a full-time position working Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, based fully on site in Aston. The role is initially offered on a six-month temporary basis, with the potential for extension or a permanent opportunity.As a Trading Standards Technical Assistant, you will provide essential administrative support to Trading Standards Officers, helping to ensure investigations and enforcement activities run smoothly. Your responsibilities will include preparing and issuing correspondence, maintaining accurate records, carrying out data entry and supporting a range of general administrative tasks. In addition to office-based duties, you will assist officers with operational activities, including supporting evidence-handling processes, transporting items and evidence to designated locations using council vehicles, and providing practical assistance during investigations. You may also be asked to undertake site visits and drive-by observations to support ongoing enquiries. This is a varied role that combines office administration with hands-on operational support.
\nWhat you'll need to succeedTo be successful in this role, you will have previous administrative experience, strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail. You will be comfortable managing data accurately and working within a regulated environment where confidentiality is important. A full driving licence is essential, as you will be required to drive Birmingham City Council vehicles as part of your duties. You will also need to be comfortable undertaking physical aspects of the role, including lifting and moving evidence bags and supporting officers during field-based activities. Strong communication skills, a flexible attitude and a willingness to support a wide range of tasks will be key to your success. A Basic DBS check will be required during onboarding.
\nWhat you'll get in returnIn return, you will receive a pay rate of £13.45 per hour plus holiday allowance, giving a total hourly rate of £15.07. You will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience within Birmingham City Council's Trading Standards service, working alongside experienced enforcement professionals and contributing to important investigations and consumer protection activities.
