HWRC Operative – Flexible, Mobile Role Across Dumfries & Galloway
\nLooking for a varied, active role where no two days are the same? Join our dedicated team and play a key part in keeping Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) running smoothly across Dumfries and Galloway.
\nYou’ll provide essential cover across our network of 9 sites Castle Douglas, Locharmoss, Lincluden, Annan, Dalbeattie, Sanquhar, Thornhill, Beattock and Lockerbie, supporting operations where you’re needed most.
\nThis is a flexible, mobile role – you won’t be tied to one location. Instead, you’ll travel between sites, stepping in at short notice to cover absences, support busy periods, and help maintain high-quality, customer-focused services.
\nWhat you’ll be doing:
\n • Supporting day-to-day operations across nine HWRCs
\n • Assisting and advising the public to maximise recycling
\n • Helping with the safe manual handling of waste materials
\n • Keeping sites clean, safe, and compliant with procedures and licences
\n • Occasionally supporting operations at Transfer Stations

\nWho we are looking for:
\nAbout you:
\n• Educated to Standard Grade level
\n • A confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills
\n • Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work under pressure
\n • A team player who can adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment
Experience in waste management, construction, or a related field is desirable, as is customer service experience. A good understanding of recycling and Health & Safety is essential.
\nYou must be educated to a Standard Grade level. Have good communication and interpersonal skills, be motivated and be able to work under pressure, either on your own initiative or as part of a team.
\nExperience in the waste industry or building industry or a customer facing role would be desirable. You should have an understanding of the importance of recycling and Health & Safety in the workplace.
\nWorking Pattern
\nWe are offering flexibility in how this role is filled:
\nHours will be worked on a rota basis, including some weekend working (Saturday and Sunday). Shifts will be flexible and aligned to service demand.
\nHWRC Operative (3 posts) will be for 30 hours per week on a rota basis, including some weekend working when required (Saturday and Sunday), flexible working can be accommodated.
\nThese posts are fixed term for a period of 12 months. They may be suitable for secondment. Agreement from your line manager must be sought before applying for this post.
\nAdditional Requirements
\nA current driving licence is desirable due to the mobile nature of the role. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence, we will consider alternative transport arrangements.
\nThis post is subject to candidate vetting through Disclosure Scotland.
