Job Description
Swing Shift: 3PM to 11PM Monday-Friday ( Approx 6 weeks, possibly longer)
Job Summary:
The Temporary Janitor will play a vital role in ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of a homeless shelter facility. This position requires attention to detail and a commitment to providing a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our clients, staff, and visitors. Because this is an active emergency shelter serving individuals experiencing homelessness, the work environment can be fast-paced and may involve regular interaction with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or behavioral crises. Candidates should be comfortable working in this setting while maintaining professionalism, compassion, and appropriate boundaries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, common areas, sleeping areas, and administrative offices.
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors to maintain cleanliness.
- Dust and wipe down surfaces, including furniture and fixtures.
- Empty trash and recycling bins regularly.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of rooms for events and meetings.
- Report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or biohazards to management promptly.
- Ensure that cleaning supplies are stocked and organized.
- Follow all health and safety guidelines, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleaning protocols.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings and promptly report any safety or security concerns to shelter management.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in janitorial or custodial work is preferred but not required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
- Good communication skills and a respectful, professional demeanor.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in a dynamic shelter environment.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
