Software Engineer
Job Description
About Soma Capital
\nSoma Capital is a ten-year-old, ~$1B AUM seed fund founded by Aneel Ranadive. We lead seed rounds and follow on through Series AC. With 1,000+ first checks and 30+ unicorns (Deel, Rippling, Ramp, Razorpay, Rappi, Mercor, Cognition Labs, etc.), we're day-one partners to the next generation of superhuman builders. Founders tap our deep network of Fortune 500 CEOs, NBA ownership ties, and repeat-founder friends for pivotal customers and hires.
\nWhat You'll Do
\n- \n
- Design, build, and ship internal products that sharpen our information edge: data pipelines, search/ranking engines, deal-sourcing dashboards, and AI research agents. \n
- Prototype in days, not months, working elbow-to-elbow with Aneel, the investment team, portfolio founders, and LPs. \n
- Refactor legacy code, pay down tech debt, and streamline a lean modern stack. \n
- Choose pragmatism over dogma: if a low/no-code tool solves it faster, use it. \n
- Own projects end-to-end (scoping, architecture, deployment, observability) and occasionally embed with founders to crack hard tech problems. \n
Your Toolkit (Must-Haves)
\n- \n
- 0-3 years professional engineering experience or exceptional new-grad portfolio. \n
- B.S. in CS or another STEM discipline from a top institution (or equivalent proof of excellence). \n
- Deep skill in TypeScript/React or Python (FastAPI); eagerness to learn the other. \n
- Comfort across the stack: React frontend, Python APIs, SQL/ETL data plumbing, and Pulumi infrastructure. \n
- Fluency in SQL and data modeling; comfort deploying to any major cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.). \n
- Must have authorization to work in the United States (we cannot sponsor visas). \n
Bonus Points
\n- \n
- ML/LLM infrastructure, Typesense search, ETL/data-engineering pipelines. \n
- Pulumi-based IaC, GitHub Actions CI/CD. \n
- Prior startup, hackathon, or incubation experience. \n
- Thrives in high-autonomy, high-ambiguity contexts. \n
Stack Snapshot
\n- \n
- Main app: T3 stack (Next.js + tRPC + TypeScript + Prisma) on GCP. \n
- Search & ranking: Typesense + embeddings. \n
- Rapid prototypes/MVPs: spun up on Railway or Vercel. \n
- Infrastructure: Pulumi-driven IaC with GitHub Actions. \n
Why Soma
\n- \n
- 8,000 sqft SoHo HQ 4-5 days/week in office. Code shoulder-to-shoulder with Aneel, the investment team, and a nonstop parade of founders. \n
- Immediate ownership: ship production features in month one; path to tech-lead projects by month six and optional jump into investing or a portfolio company role later. \n
- Founder osmotic learning: discussing blitz-scaling over dumplings with Deel's founder; expect that level of access weekly. \n
- Internal hack-days double as incubators; spin up a side-project that sticks and we may seed it. \n
- Fun off-sites in places like Miami, Mexico City, and occasional Bay Area trips. \n
- No bureaucracy: ask for the tool, book, or service you need; if it moves the mission, it shows up tomorrow. \n
- Competitive comp: $100-160K base + bonus + potential carry (commensurate with experience). \n
- Standard benefits: health, dental, vision, 401(k), unlimited PTO. \n
- Help set the engineering culture: greenfield chance to build it right. \n
