Civil Engineer (Solid Waste / Land Development)

Location: San Diego, CA
Duration: 9-Month Contract-to-Hire
Travel: Approximately 10%

Required Qualifications

  • 1–3+ years of experience in solid waste, landfill gas, civil site design, or land development projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and the ability to independently develop engineering drawings and designs.
  • Experience with permitting processes, regulatory compliance, and agency coordination.
  • Strong communication, client-facing, and project coordination skills.
  • Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

Job Overview

SCS Engineers is seeking a motivated Civil Engineer to support a variety of solid waste, landfill, landfill gas, and land development projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in civil site design, permitting, and construction support, along with strong AutoCAD Civil 3D capabilities.

This position offers the opportunity to work on critical infrastructure projects, collaborate directly with clients, and support projects from design through construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed civil engineering plans and drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Support the design and execution of civil site projects, including:
    • Landfill expansions and closures
    • Solid waste facilities
    • Landfill gas infrastructure
    • Site development projects
  • Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Assist with project management activities, including scheduling, resource planning, and project tracking.
  • Perform technical analyses such as:
    • Grading and earthwork calculations
    • Cut/fill analysis
    • Stormwater management design
    • Waste volume and capacity evaluations
  • Review project deliverables for quality, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned project tasks and deliverables while maintaining project schedules.
  • Work closely with Project Managers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Support permitting efforts and regulatory submissions.
  • Review construction documents and provide engineering support during project execution.
  • Conduct occasional site visits throughout Southern California, including the San Diego and Long Beach areas.
  • Provide field and construction support as needed during active project phases.

Preferred Experience

  • Civil site design for landfills, transfer stations, solid waste facilities, or environmental infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of grading, drainage, stormwater, and earthwork design principles.
  • Experience coordinating with regulatory agencies and navigating permitting requirements.
  • Familiarity with construction oversight and field engineering support.
