Job Overview

The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) Specialist plays a crucial role in the daily management of the ECMO program, working under the guidance of the ECMO Coordinator. This position involves comprehensive monitoring and troubleshooting of the ECMO circuit and associated equipment throughout the management period.

The ECMO Specialist is tasked with:

  • Ensuring the ECMO circuit functions effectively and maintaining its integrity.
  • Administering blood products and medications safely and accurately for patients across all age groups, from neonates to the elderly.
  • Collaborating with bedside nurses to guarantee adequate patient perfusion, correcting acid-base balance, and ensuring hemodynamic stability within prescribed parameters.
  • Managing Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) when it is integrated with the ECMO circuit and facilitating participation in Physical and Occupational Therapy.
  • Executing technical skills with precision and safety while anticipating and addressing crises and emergencies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Conducting quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance as per organizational guidelines.
  • Engaging in continuous education and professional development, including annual educational activities or pursuing advanced academic qualifications.
  • Actively participating in quality improvement initiatives by identifying issues and evaluating solutions.
  • Providing support to other departments as needed to meet staffing and patient care requirements.
  • Assisting the ECMO Medical Director and Coordinator in gathering and reviewing quality improvement data to establish best practices.
  • Participating in domestic and international ECMO transport, including ground, helicopter, and fixed-wing flights.
Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following educational and experience criteria:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in the State of Florida, or graduation from an accredited Registered Nurse program with current licensure in the State of Florida.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is required.
  • Preferred: At least one year of experience as an ECMO Specialist with Primer training.
Motor Vehicle Operator Designation

Individuals in this role will not be required to operate vehicles for business purposes. A frequent driver is defined as someone who uses their personal vehicle for work at least once daily, makes five trips per week, or drives an average of over 150 miles weekly in the course of their job.

Licensure/Certification/Registration Requirements

Mandatory certifications include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - may be obtained within 6 weeks of hire
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - may be obtained within 6 weeks of hire

Additionally, candidates must possess one of the following:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) licensure in the State of Florida
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Florida
