An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Civil Engineer to join the York office of a growing, employee-owned engineering consultancy.Working alongside experienced engineers both in the office and on site, you will develop your technical knowledge and gradually take greater responsibility for the design, analysis and delivery of engineering projects.You will support the preparation of calculations, designs, drawings, specifications and technical reports across a varied project portfolio. As your confidence and experience develop, you will also gain exposure to client liaison, tender preparation, project planning and the management of project time and budgets.This is an ideal opportunity for an ambitious graduate who wants broad practical experience and structured support towards professional qualification.About the ConsultancyThe employer is an established, employee-owned civil and structural engineering consultancy with offices throughout the UK.Around 70% of its workload is design work within the rail sector, with the remaining projects covering transportation, energy, heavy civil engineering and structural engineering.The business is known for delivering practical and commercially considered engineering solutions that help clients manage cost, programme and construction risk.Its employee-owned structure gives staff a genuine voice within the business and the opportunity to contribute to its continued success.The RoleAs Civil Engineer, you will work closely with senior engineers and project managers on the technical delivery of civil and structural engineering projects.Your responsibilities will initially be carried out with guidance and supervision, with increasing independence as your skills and experience develop.The role will combine office-based design work with site visits, inspections and surveys. Some overnight or weekend work may occasionally be required depending on project needs.Key Responsibilities Engineering DesignAssist with the preparation of civil and structural engineering designsUndertake calculations under the guidance of experienced engineersSupport the development of practical and cost-effective engineering solutionsPrepare technical reports, specifications, schedules and design informationAssist with the production and review of technical drawingsApply relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and industry guidanceUse appropriate analysis, design and drafting softwareMaintain accurate design records and supporting documentationWork in accordance with the company's Quality Assurance Management SystemProject DeliverySupport senior engineers with project planning and deliveryWork to agreed project programmes, deadlines and budgetsMonitor allocated design hours and provide progress updatesAssist with project documentation and technical submissionsHelp identify engineering risks, constraints and design issuesCoordinate information with other engineers and project disciplinesSupport the delivery of work from initial concept through to completionCommunicate effectively with project managers and senior team membersDrawings and Technical InformationSupport the preparation of technical drawings and specificationsAssist with the development of design details and construction informationUse AutoCAD and other relevant engineering softwareCheck drawings and documents for accuracy and consistencyIncorporate comments and amendments from senior engineersHelp ensure technical information is issued correctly and on timeSite WorkAttend site visits, inspections and surveys under supervisionAssist with collecting measurements and technical informationRecord site observations clearly and accuratelySupport the preparation of inspection records and site reportsLiaise professionally with contractors and site representativesFollow company and client health and safety proceduresTravel to project locations when requiredTenders and Commercial SupportAssist with the preparation of fee proposals and tender degree in Civil or Structural EngineeringDegree from an ICE or IStructE-accredited courseMinimum 2:1 degree classification or equivalentCommitment to working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer statusSound understanding of civil or structural engineering principlesStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to prepare clear calculations and technical informationGood numerical and analytical abilityStrong attention to detailAbility to organise and prioritise workloadCompetence using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPointAbility to work independently and as part of a teamProactive, flexible and willing to learnWillingness to undertake site visitsWillingness to complete occasional overnight or weekend work where requiredDesirable ExperiencePrevious engineering
