Salary: £14,560 per annumLocation: Uppingham, RutlandContract type: permanent, with a fully founded Level 3 or 5 apprenticeship, depending on experienceWorking pattern: Full-time, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am5pmAbout the roleUppingham School, founded in 1584, is a leading co-educational independent boarding school with around 800 pupils aged 11 to 18 and approximately 550 staff. This apprenticeship is a genuine opportunity to begin a career in People Operations, combining hands-on experience and mentoring with formal training towards a nationally recognised qualification. You'll provide structured, accurate support to the People function, with a particular focus on the School's HR Information System (HRIS iTrent) and the smooth day-to-day running of People operations.What you'll be doingHRIS development, maintenance and optimisationSupport the build and configuration of the HRIS (iTrent), including modules such as employee records, absence, onboarding and trainingAssist with system testing, data migration and validation during development phasesMaintain data quality through regular audits, reconciliations and error correctionHelp create and maintain standardised workflows, including onboarding, contract changes and approvalsContribute to monthly and ad hoc reporting, such as headcount and absence trendsMaintain clear process guidance and documentation for HRIS activitiesData integrity and complianceKeep employee records accurate, complete and up to dateMaintain the Single Central Register in line with statutory safeguarding requirementsEnsure data is handled in line with GDPR and School policyAudit digital and paper employee files to keep them inspection-readySupport internal and external audits by preparing and validating dataPeople operations deliverySupport the full employee lifecycle: onboarding (contracts, pre-employment checks, system setup), in-life changes (promotions, pay changes, contract amendments) and offboarding (leavers processing, exit documentation, system updates)Carry out safer recruitment checks, including references and DBSSupport People Partners in managing key timelines such as probation reviews and appraisal cyclesSupport payroll through accurate, timely submission of data changesManage and triage the People inbox, responding to or escalating queries appropriatelyProcess and workflow managementCarry out repeatable administrative processes with consistency and accuracySupport documentation and improvement of standard operating proceduresIdentify and propose solutions to inefficienciesWhat you'll bringStrong digital capability and confidence working with systems (e.g. Excel, databases, HR systems)Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, particularly with data entry and validationComfortable with repetitive, process-driven tasks requiring consistencyHighly organised, able to manage multiple workflows and deadlinesStrong written and verbal communication skillsA methodical, structured and disciplined approach to workA strong sense of accountability for data quality and outputsDiscreet and trustworthy when handling confidential informationIt would also be great if you have:An interest in HR systems, data or process improvementKnowledge of databases and the ability to manipulate dataPrevious experience in an administrative or data-focused roleAn understanding of data protection principlesExperience in the school or education sectorWhat's on offer30 days annual leave plus Bank HolidaysFree Westfield HealthcareFree membership of the dual-use Sports Centre (£25 annual joining fee)Free staff lunches in term-timeSchool fee discount for children of Uppingham staff (pro-rated for part-time staff)Retail, gym, supermarket, cinema and restaurant discountsCycle to work schemeEmployee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health ServicesRecognised Disability Confident and Mindful employerComplimentary staff ticket to selected School performancesAdditional informationThis role involves regular contact with children and young people and is subject to safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS check.
