Lawes Consulting Group is proud to be partnering exclusively with a well-established and growing commercial insurance business to find their next Regional Director, who will lead and manage the commercial insurance function within their designated region, delivering profitable growth, strong broker and client relationships, and high-quality service. The role balances strategic leadership with hands-on trading, ensuring business targets are achieved in line with underwriting appetite and company objectives.

Business Development & Growth

  • Drive profitable new business and retention within the region

  • Identify opportunities for expansion with existing and prospective broker partners
  • \n
  • Implement regional sales and distribution strategies aligned to overall company goals
  • \n
\n

Broker & Client Engagement

\n
    \n
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with brokers, clients, and industry stakeholders
  • \n
  • Deliver compelling propositions and negotiate terms to secure and retain business
  • \n
  • Act as the key regional contact, representing the company at market events and industry forums
  • \n
\n

Team Leadership & Development

\n

  • Lead, motivate, and coach regional underwriters and business development managers to achieve financial and service targets
  • \n
  • Foster a high-performance culture, encouraging collaboration and continuous improvement
  • \n
  • Ensure training and career development pathways are supported across the team
  • \n
\n

Operational & Underwriting Excellence

\n
    \n
  • Develop and deliver agreed budgets for the region
  • \n
  • Oversee MI reporting and pipeline management to support regional performance
  • \n
  • Monitor underwriting discipline, risk selection, and pricing in line with company standards
  • \n
  • Deliver efficient, consistent service to brokers and clients, resolving escalated issues promptly
  • \n
  • Liaise with operational support functions to implement policies and procedures efficiently across the region
  • \n

Strategic Contribution

  • Contribute to national commercial insurance strategy, providing insights on regional market dynamics
  • \n
  • Influence product development, underwriting appetite, and trading approaches based on broker feedback
  • \n
  • Support digital trading and ensure adoption of e-trade platforms where applicable
  • \n
\n

Day to Day

\n

\n

On any given day, you might be:

\n
    \n
  • Meeting with key brokers to negotiate terms or strengthen a long-standing relationship
  • \n
  • Reviewing regional MI and pipeline reports to track progress against budget
  • \n
  • Coaching an underwriter through a tricky risk decision or pricing question
  • \n
  • Resolving an escalated client issue and liaising with operations to fix it at the root
  • \n
  • Representing the company at an industry event or market forum
  • \n
  • Feeding regional market insight back into national strategy discussions
  • \n
  • Checking in with your team to keep morale, performance, and development on track
  • \n

Experience

\n

\n
    \n
  • Proven track record in commercial insurance, preferably in a leadership or senior underwriting role
  • \n
  • Strong knowledge of SME and mid-market commercial lines
  • \n
  • Established broker network and ability to build trusted, long-term relationships
  • \n
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing teams
  • \n
  • Minimum 10 years' commercial insurance experience
  • \n
  • Degree educated, ACII qualified
  • \n
\n
