RN – PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Monroe, NC
Facility: Community Hospital

Schedule & Assignment Details

  • Shift: 12-hour Night Shift (36 hours/week)
  • Shift Hours: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  • Clinical Interview: Required
  • On-Call/Call Back: None
  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday Requirement: Travelers are expected to work 75% of scheduled holidays.
  • Floating Requirement: Must be willing to float within Region 2, as needed.

  • Trauma Designation: None
  • Teaching Hospital: No (only Community Schools of Nursing)
  • Chest Pain Center: No (Part of Lee Garvey Chest Pain Network)
  • Accreditations: The Joint Commission (TJC) Stroke Accredited
  • EMR: EPIC
  • Radius rule: Traveler s permanent address must be 50 miles outside of home unit
Unit Information:
Unit Beds: 11
Minimum 18 months of PCU RN experience required
First-time travelers: Not preferred but will be considered (Resource Team)

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:
Stroke, Heart Failure, Chest pain, patient requiring fluid resuscitation/blood products, COPD, Cardiac Cath pre/post, ETOH/CIWA, IVDA, Respiratory illnesses, GI Disorders and infections, Liver Failure, AKI/CKD

Patient Ratios:
RN: 1:3-4
CNA: 1:5-6

Required Certifications & Licenses:
  • Active RN License
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS (Required for Resource Team)
or other position specific requirements such as Driver's License and/or Insurance:

Skills required:
Gtt Management: critical care drips to include Insulin, Nitroglycerin, Cardene, Diltiazem, Amiodarone; Heparin, Blood products
General PCU skillset: Stroke experience, cardiac rhythm interpretation, trach care and management, PIV starts, chest tube management, NGT placement, drain/tube management (Dobhoff, PEG tubes, Hemovac, JP drains, flexiseals, foley insertion/management, etc), PCA pumps

Support within the Department:
CNA – ratios vary
Receptionist/HUC
Charge nurse, 24/7 – may or may not have patients
Phlebotomy – peripheral blood draws only
IV/VAT Team
Resource Nurse – as available
RT, 24/7
Hospitalist, 24/7
Intensivist, 24/7 (virtual after hours)
Telemetry monitoring/tech? No monitoring tech; nurses read monitors and respond
Virtual Nurses 24/7

Technology/Equipment:
EMR: EPIC
IV Pump: Alaris
Med dispensing: Omnicell
Monitors: Phillips
Floating: If yes, where?
As needed within Union
Will be required to float per region needs – will require floating to all facilities listed below, as needed, within scope of practice – DECLINE if not agreeable
Region 2
If floating mid-shift, Traveler will be paid for the time traveling between facilities (will remain on the clock)

RTO: Subject to Resource Team approval
