The Role of Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC)

The Clinical Nurse Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-focused care and overseeing all unit functions during their assigned shift. Working alongside other management team members, the CNC directs, monitors, and assesses nursing care in line with established policies and procedures. This role also serves as a resource for staff and exemplifies a commitment to the organization's vision, mission, and values, thereby enhancing patient experiences and clinical outcomes that contribute to overall departmental success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates admission and discharge processes to promote efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
  • Engages in ongoing evaluations of patient care quality in collaboration with the management team.
  • Works with subject matter experts and fellow managers to foster a collaborative environment that enhances outcomes and service quality.
  • Embraces a patient-first philosophy and participates in service recovery when required.
  • Contributes to improving staff engagement by implementing current nursing strategies, including employee rounding and hourly check-ins.
  • Provides input on interviewing, selecting, and training new personnel. Recommends and executes actions related to training, conflict resolution, compliance with personnel policies, performance evaluations, and disciplinary measures to enhance organizational competitiveness.
  • Assists in staff scheduling and manages labor aspects in accordance with patient care needs and productivity standards.
  • Ensures effective inventory management and assists in overseeing supplies and equipment.

Qualifications Required:

  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is required. As of June 24, 2021, candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or be enrolled in a BSN or advanced degree program, obtaining a BSN within five years of starting in the RN role. Grandfathering is accepted between departments and entities. Exemptions may be granted by the facility's Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and documented for CNO Council members. Facilities will track exemptions as needed. RNs with 10 or more years of experience are exempt.
  • Licensure: Must be currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state(s) of practice and/or possess an active compact license, adhering to applicable laws and regulations. Current licensure with the North Carolina Board of Nursing is required. eNLC (Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact) license may apply; candidates should verify with NCBON.
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
