Pastoral Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient Teaching Assistant to join our specialist educational provision in Thetford from September. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people aged 11-16 years with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

Start Date: September 2026

Monday to Friday | 08:30am - 3:30pm

Pupil-Funded Role

Working as part of a supportive and experienced team, you will provide both 1:1 and small group support, helping pupils to engage with learning, regulate emotions, build positive relationships, and achieve their individual goals.

About the Role

This is a heavily pastoral position where relationship-building is key. You will act as a positive role model and mentor, supporting young people who may have experienced significant barriers to education and personal development.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing tailored 1:1 support and leading small group interventions.
\n
• Supporting students with complex SEMH needs both inside and outside the classroom.
\n
• Building positive, professional relationships that promote engagement and trust.
\n
• Acting as a role model, demonstrating appropriate behaviours and attitudes.
\n
• Mentoring students to help develop confidence, resilience, emotional regulation, and social skills.
\n
• Supporting behaviour management strategies in line with school policies.
\n
• Maintaining clear professional boundaries while offering consistent pastoral support.
\n
• Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals to meet individual pupil needs.
\n
• Helping create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.
\n

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

• Experienced in working with young people, ideally within education, care, youth work, or SEMH settings.
\n
• Confident managing challenging behaviour positively and consistently.
\n
• An excellent communicator with strong relationship-building skills.
\n
• Committed to maintaining professional boundaries and safeguarding standards.
\n
• Able to work effectively as part of a team while using their own initiative.
