Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer | Robotics & Autonomous Systems
\nLocation: Birmingham
\nSalary: up to £43K
\nFull time | Permanent
\nDesign hardware that operates where failure isn’t an option
\nAre you a Mechanical Design Engineer working on drones, UAVs, robotics or advanced electromechanical products — and starting to feel boxed in by incremental upgrades or overly siloed roles?
\nThis is an opportunity to take full ownership of real, mission-critical hardware, from concept through to manufacture, in a fast-moving engineering team building autonomous inspection systems for extreme environments.
\nWhat You’ll Be Working On
\nYou’ll be designing field-deployable robotic hardware that must survive:
\n- \n
- Harsh weather and corrosive environments \n
- Confined, high-risk industrial spaces \n
- High consequence failure scenarios \n
Your role spans the entire product lifecycle:
\n- \n
- Concept design, prototyping and validation \n
- Detailed mechanical design and DFM-ready drawings \n
- BOM / CBOM ownership and engineering change control \n
- Close collaboration with electronics and software engineers \n
This is a hands-on, high-impact role — your designs won’t sit on a shelf.
\nThis Role Is Ideal For Engineers With Experience In:
\n- \n
- Drones / UAVs / robotics / autonomous systems \n
- Lightweight structures and complex assemblies \n
- Electromechanical products with tight tolerances \n
- Designing for reliability, serviceability and manufacture \n
- Products that leave the lab and go into the real world \n
What You’ll Bring
\n- \n
- 4+ years’ experience in a mechanical engineering role \n
- Strong SolidWorks capability \n
- Proven mechanical design experience on physical products (portfolio required) \n
- Good DFM discipline and documentation practices \n
- Experience owning BOMs and engineering changes \n
- Enough electronics/software awareness to design intelligently alongside other disciplines \n
Nice To Have (Not Essential)
\n- \n
- Taking products from R&D into manufacture \n
- Experience with harsh environments (IP ratings, corrosion, impact) \n
- Background in aerospace, defence, energy or advanced robotics \n
- Cable management, tethered systems or deployable mechanisms \n
