Role Overview

Surgical technologists play a vital role in the surgical team, contributing to the delivery of patient care. They assist in various stages of patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, all aimed at achieving our mission of quality service and excellence.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the surgical team under the guidance of a surgeon and other licensed professionals.
  • Ensuring a safe operating room environment and proper functioning of equipment.
  • Maintaining an organized sterile field and accurately tracking items used during procedures.
  • Applying knowledge of aseptic principles and human anatomy to assist in surgical procedures.
  • Preparing the surgical area by ensuring all supplies are sterile and ready for use.
  • Assisting with patient positioning and preparation prior to surgery.
  • Conducting quality assurance checks on supplies in accordance with sterilization standards.
  • Participating in reconciliation activities post-surgery.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and critical thinking abilities, adapting to a fast-paced environment and shifting responsibilities as needed. Additional administrative tasks may be required to prepare for patient cases.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or a practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Preferred experience in an operating room setting.
  • Solid understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures.
  • National certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
  • If an LPN, must hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing Board or possess multi-state licensure privileges.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Completion of annual continuing education units (CEUs) and competency training as required by the department.
  • If working in North Dakota and not an LPN, must be registered as Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) with the North Dakota Board of Nursing at the start of employment.
