Surgical technologists play a vital role in the surgical care team, assisting in various aspects of patient care. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in alignment with our mission for quality and service excellence.
- Working under the guidance of a surgeon and other licensed professionals to ensure safe and effective surgical procedures.
- Maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring all equipment is functional, and that procedures are conducted safely.
- Accurately tracking items used during surgeries and keeping a well-organized sterile field.
- Applying knowledge of aseptic principles and human anatomy to assist in invasive and diagnostic procedures.
- Preparing the surgical area by ensuring all supplies are sterile and ready for use, as well as assisting in patient positioning and preparation.
- Making minor adjustments to instruments to prevent malfunctions and conducting quality assurance checks on supplies.
- Participating in reconciliation activities post-surgery to verify the completeness of items returned from the surgical site.
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and critical thinking abilities, adapting quickly to a fast-paced environment and changes in duties. Additional administrative tasks may be required for patient case preparation. LPN duties are included for those with an LPN license.
Qualifications- Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or an approved practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is required.
- Experience in an operating room setting is preferred.
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, surgical instruments, aseptic techniques, and procedures gained through post-secondary education.
- National certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
- If an LPN, must hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing Board or possess multi-state licensure privileges.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within the first 60 days of employment.
- Completion of annual continuing education units (CEUs) and competency training as mandated by the department and facility.
- If working in North Dakota and not an LPN, must be registered on the North Dakota Board of Nursing Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Registry at the start of employment.
