Experience: 2 years NICU experience
First-time traveler: Send for manager approval for first time traveler
Patient Types:
- Respiratory support including nasal cannula, CPAP, NAVA, conventional ventilation, oscillator ventilation, nitric oxide
- Central lines including PICC, UAC, UVC, arterial line, Broviac, chest tubes, NG/PO feedings, IV therapy including maintenance fluids, vasopressor support, sedation and paralytics, video EEG and cooling, eat/sleep/console/treat
Patient Ratios:
- 1:1-3
- Follows AWHONN staffing standards
Required Certifications: BLS, NRP, STABLE
Skills required
- Must have level III NICU experience, provide care for high-risk newborns - will not accept any travelers without this experience (no exceptions)
- Assessment/reassessment, IV therapy, medication administration, NG/PO feedings, collaboration with ancillary departments, and parents to provide exceptional care to the infants
- Knowledgeable to care for high risk, critically ill preterm and term newborns requiring multi-system support measures
Support on the Unit:
- 24/7 Charge nurse: patient assignment based on staffing
- 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Neonatologist in the department
- House Supervisor (supports all hospital departments)
- Women s Health Director, NICU Nurse Manager and NICU Nurse Educator
- Lactation Consultants, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Social Work, Case Management, Pharmacy, Dietician, Chaplain
Charting System/Equipment:
- EMR: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Med Dispensing: Pyxis
Unit equipment: Angel Eye milk tracker, Client B450 cardiac monitoring, Medela feeding pumps, Artic Sun for cooling
Floating:
- Women's Care Center (another inpatient unit) for newborn care only
- Travelers float first
Orientation:
- First Day: Meet with Nurse Manager and Nurse Educator for orientation and onboarding
- Remainder of the day will be on the unit for training
- Second Day: Training with preceptor
- Third Day: Assigned a work buddy
- Will have own patient assignment
Scheduling:
- Weekend rotation : Every other weekend, block scheduling and pattern scheduling not guaranteed
- No set schedules - plugged into the schedule where traveler is needed
- Can we approve time off: NM to approve
- Will they be on call: No call
- Holiday Expectations: every other, based on start date
