Job Description

Job Description
Join Our Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship

Our organization is currently looking for a certified family medicine or internal medicine physician, holding ABFM or AOBFP certification, who is either board eligible or board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This role is for a faculty attending physician within our fellowship program. While experience in academic medicine is preferred, it is not a strict requirement. We operate as a single-trainee fellowship program affiliated with a well-established, university-linked family medicine program in Central Pennsylvania, which follows an 8-8-8 structure. Additionally, we have a transitional year residency associated with our program.

Our dedicated palliative care team offers consultation and management services across various settings, including inpatient care, an outpatient palliative clinic, and three local nursing homes. The team consists of:

  • 4 physicians
  • 4 Advanced Practice Providers
  • 1 fellow
  • 1 licensed social worker
  • 1 pharmacist
  • 1 medical assistant/secretary

We also have a committed program director and coordinator overseeing the fellowship, along with two physicians who serve as certified hospice medical directors for separate hospice agencies.

Our fellowship program boasts a remarkable track record, with a 100% pass rate on board exams. This success is attributed to our comprehensive hands-on training, which includes managing a diverse range of diagnoses and acuity levels, complemented by well-structured didactic sessions. Being the sole fellowship at our hospital allows the fellow to gain insights from various subspecialists. Our sponsoring institution is UPMC Graduate Medical Education, with our affiliated hospital being UPMC Altoona. Furthermore, we maintain a close relationship with the family medicine residency, providing oversight for residents during their geriatric rotations, occasionally precepting them in the family medicine office, and covering the inpatient medicine service while continuing to see our own family medicine patients.

We Are Looking For Candidates Who:
  • Embody the core values of our organization: quality and safety, dignity and respect, caring and listening, responsibility and integrity, and excellence and innovation.
  • Demonstrate vision and enthusiasm for advancing the training of future hospice and palliative medicine physicians.

Our fellowship is situated in the picturesque region of central Pennsylvania, approximately two hours from Pittsburgh and three hours from Baltimore/Washington. Altoona offers an affordable cost of living, blending the amenities of a small metropolitan area with the natural beauty of a rural setting. The region is rich in diverse dining options, year-round outdoor activities, sports, cultural events, and artistic opportunities. Additionally, Altoona is home to a variety of religious communities, excellent public and private educational institutions, and numerous higher education facilities.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We invite you to visit us and explore the possibility of making Altoona your new home!
