Job Description

Job Description

We are seeking a strategic and accomplished Structural Lead Designer to direct the layout, design, and coordination of structural systems. This mid-to-senior career role bridges the gap between conceptual design and execution, offering autonomy on standalone smaller projects and technical leadership on large-scale initiatives. The successful candidate will leverage deep subject matter expertise to oversee the creation of project deliverables, manage cross-discipline coordination, and provide critical mentorship to intermediate and entry-level design staff.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design Development & Execution: Plan and conduct complex design work requiring advanced technical judgment, creativity, and structural coordination. Generate comprehensive deliverables across all project phases, including models, plans, elevations, sections, schedules, and details.
  • Project & System Leadership: Function as the standalone designer for small-scale projects or serve as the Area/System Lead Designer on large-scale infrastructure projects, directly collaborating with engineers to establish project goals, system requirements, and code research.
  • Quality Assurance & Document Control: Oversee the creation, coordination, and publishing of project documentation. Review and back-check personal designs and the work of junior team members, ensuring a high degree of accuracy and strict adherence to technical specifications.
  • Cross-Discipline Coordination: Partner with internal and external multi-disciplinary teams to resolve design conflicts, integrate field conditions, and mitigate scope creep affecting budget and schedule.
  • Technical Guidance & Mentorship: Provide ongoing leadership, direction, and technical guidance to entry-level designers, intermediate designers, and early-career engineers.
  • Field Surveying & Analysis: Perform site visits and field surveys of existing conditions to inform accurate design development and technical problem-solving.
  • Project Controls Support: Identify task breakdowns, estimate required labor hours for self and assigned teams, and assist with engineering calculations under the direction of the Project Engineer.

Required Qualifications

  • Technical Software Proficiency: Extensive advanced modeling and drafting experience utilizing Revit and AutoCAD, alongside sophisticated model review expertise using Navisworks and Bluebeam.
  • Industry Standards: Demonstrated working knowledge of structural building codes, industry standards, and engineering best practices.
  • Problem-Solving Acumen: Proven ability to analyze technical problems, evaluate competitive solutions (including pros and cons), and clearly present findings to clients and project leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management Aptitude: Demonstrated understanding of project controls, including scope management, scheduling, and identifying early indicators of scope creep.
  • Calculations Support: Experience performing basic engineering calculations under the guidance of a professional engineer.
