Special Education Teacher in Des Plaines, IL

Take on a rewarding contract opportunity as an Academic Life Skills LBS1 Special Education Teacher in a warm, student-centered environment. In this role, you'll make a meaningful impact each day, guiding a small group (7–9 students) through both academic and life skills growth. You’ll work in a self-contained setting, providing thoughtful, individualized instruction and support for students with a range of needs—including autism, Down syndrome, and specific medical care needs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead a self-contained classroom focused on life skills and academic achievement
• Create, implement, and adapt individualized curriculum based on IEPs
• Provide hands-on, compassionate support for students with varied learning and medical needs
• Oversee and support classroom staff, and coordinate with related service providers and nurses
• Maintain accurate IEP documentation and data tracking for each student’s progress
• Organize and facilitate effective team discussions and meetings
• Foster positive, ongoing communication with families to ensure student success

Qualifications:

• Active Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 endorsement
• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field
• Experience supporting students with autism, Down syndrome, or medical fragility preferred
• Strong collaboration skills with a track record of effective behavior management
• Excellent communication abilities and a commitment to inclusive education
