If you are passionate about fostering inclusive learning environments and skilled in American Sign Language, consider making a meaningful impact by supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing as a contract Sign Language Interpreter. In this vital role, you will ensure students have full access to classroom instruction and school experiences by facilitating clear communication across a variety of educational settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate sign language interpretation for students throughout the school day
  • Interpret classroom discussions, school activities, assemblies, and field trips as needed
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, staff, administrators, and peers
  • Support student access to curriculum and school events, adapting interpreting approaches as necessary
  • Work closely with classroom teachers, special education teams, and related providers to address student needs
  • Participate in IEP meetings and staff meetings when interpreters are required
  • Maintain professional standards and confidentiality in line with school policies
  • Monitor and communicate potential barriers to student access or understanding

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language and interpreting
  • Valid VQAS Level III certification or equivalent recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or EIPA Written Test with a minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5
  • Previous K-12 interpreting experience preferred
  • Understanding of the educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional interpreter training or related credentials preferred

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior work as an educational sign language interpreter
  • Experience supporting students with IEPs
  • Familiarity with special education terminology and collaboration
