Qualifications

• Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and sign language interpreting.
• VQAS Level III certification or equivalent qualification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or EIPA Written Test with a minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5.
• Experience delivering interpreting services in a K-12 educational setting is preferred.
• Firm understanding of the educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and teamwork abilities.
• Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism within a school setting.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; advanced education, interpreter training, or related credentials are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, activities, assemblies, and field trips as assigned.
• Serve as a communication bridge for students, teachers, staff, peers, and administrators throughout the school day.
• Collaborate with teachers, special education, and related service providers to support student growth.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school district policies and professional standards.
• Adapt interpreting techniques to address each student’s unique communication and developmental needs.
• Participate in IEP and other school-related meetings where interpreting is required.
• Offer feedback to school staff on potential communication barriers affecting student access and engagement.
