Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Spotsylvania, Virginia

Make a meaningful impact as a Sign Language Interpreter by supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing in a dynamic educational setting. In this contract position, you’ll play a crucial role in ensuring that students have full access to learning, communication, and participation throughout their school day.

Responsibilities include:

• Conveying classroom instruction, group discussions, assemblies, field trips, and school activities through accurate and effective sign language interpretation.
• Fostering communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their teachers, classmates, staff, and administrators.
• Supporting students’ participation in the general education curriculum and the broader school environment.
• Working collaboratively with teachers, special education professionals, and related service providers to address each student’s unique communication needs.
• Adjusting interpreting styles to suit individual student development and preferences.
• Participating in IEP meetings, staff discussions, and other school-related gatherings to provide interpreting support.
• Offering feedback about communication access to relevant educational staff to enhance instructional opportunities for students.
• Upholding confidentiality and maintaining professional standards consistent with district policies.

What we’re looking for:

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and recognized interpreting credentials (VQAS Level III, EIPA Written with minimum Performance score of 3.5, or other Virginia-approved certifications).
• Experience in K-12 educational interpreting or related settings preferred.
• Familiarity with special education practices, terminology, and working with IEPs.
• Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills.
• Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
• High school diploma required; postsecondary education and interpreter training are a plus.
