CNC Setter Operator
Job Description
Role Purpose
\nWe are looking for an experienced CNC Setter/Operator to join our production team in Crewkerne.
\nThe role is responsible for setting and operating Citizen sliding-head CNC machines and CNC grinding machines, producing high-quality components to tight tolerances while maintaining safe, efficient and consistent production.
\nThe successful candidate will take ownership of their machines and components, from setting and tooling through to first-off inspection, in-process quality checks and completion of production records.
\nKey Responsibilities
\n- \n
- Set and operate Citizen sliding-head CNC lathes and CNC grinding machines. \n
- Carry out full machine setups, including: \n
- Selecting and installing cutting tools. \n
- Setting workholding, chucks, fixtures and jaws. \n
- Establishing machine datums using probing equipment or dial indicators. \n
- Select, load and prove CNC programs. \n
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications. \n
- Edit CNC programs and make appropriate offset and setting adjustments to maintain component dimensions and quality. \n
- Adjust tooling, speeds, feeds and offsets to optimise machine performance and cycle times. \n
- Carry out first-off inspections and ongoing in-process inspection. \n
- Use precision measuring equipment including micrometers, verniers/calipers and shadow graphs to ensure components meet drawing requirements and tight tolerances. \n
- Monitor machines during production and identify issues such as tool wear, machine malfunctions or out-of-tolerance components. \n
- Undertake in-cycle deburring where required. \n
- Record production output, scrap and quality information accurately. \n
- Maintain tooling sheets and ensure CNC programs are kept up to date. \n
- Identify alternative tooling solutions and put forward improvement ideas. \n
- Complete works orders in line with the Kanban system. \n
- Ensure any material, quality, tooling or production issues are reported promptly. \n
- Ensure material, tooling and gauging are available before setting machines. \n
- Carry out routine machine cleaning, checks and basic preventative maintenance in line with TPM requirements. \n
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment, including good 5S standards and correct use of PPE. \n
- Participate in the High Performing Team (HPT) and contribute to problem-solving and continuous improvement activities. \n
- Support other departments where required. \n

Quality & Technical Responsibility
\nThe CNC Setter/Operator will take personal ownership of the quality and accuracy of the components produced.
\nThis includes:
\n- \n
- Approving first-off components. \n
- Maintaining consistent in-process inspection. \n
- Certifying components against engineering drawings. \n
- Making appropriate machine offset and setting adjustments. \n
- Proving new CNC programs. \n
- Identifying and resolving machining issues before they affect production. \n
- Maintaining full production and quality traceability. \n
Machine & Process Experience
\nThe role requires practical experience with multi-axis CNC machining, ideally including:
\n- \n
- Citizen sliding-head lathes \n
- CNC grinders \n
- Multi-axis CNC machining \n
- CNC program selection, proving and adjustment \n
- G-code editing, ideally Fanuc \n
- Tool selection and setup \n
- Workholding and datum setting \n
- Precision inspection and measurement \n
Skills & Experience
\nThe ideal candidate will have:
\n- \n
- Previous experience as a CNC Setter/Operator. \n
- Experience setting and operating sliding-head CNC lathes and/or CNC grinding machines. \n
- The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings. \n
- The ability to understand and edit G-code, ideally Fanuc. \n
- Experience making machine offsets, tooling adjustments and programme amendments. \n
- Strong knowledge of precision measurement techniques. \n
- Experience using micrometers, verniers/calipers and shadow graphs. \n
- Good general computer skills. \n
- A logical and methodical approach to diagnosing machining and production problems. \n
- The ability to work effectively across different CNC machine types and processes. \n
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. \n
- A flexible approach and willingness to support other areas of the business when required. \n
