In this role, you will facilitate seamless communication between students, teachers, staff, and peers, using your knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) to break down barriers throughout the school day. Dynamic and collaborative, the position offers the chance to adapt your interpreting to suit each student’s individual needs, while working closely with educators and special education professionals.

What You'll Do:

  • Deliver accurate, effective sign language interpretation in classrooms, during assemblies, field trips, activities, and meetings.
  • Bridge communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their teachers, classmates, and school staff.
  • Support students’ access to the general education curriculum and help foster an inclusive environment.
  • Collaborate with educators, related service providers, and families to support student communication and IEP goals.
  • Maintain confidentiality with student records and sensitive information.
  • Adjust interpreting approaches to meet diverse student needs.
  • Participate in IEP and staff meetings as required to support effective communication.
  • Uphold professional standards and adhere to all school policies and procedures.

What You'll Bring:

  • Proficiency in ASL and sign language interpreting.
  • Recognized certification such as VQAS Level III or equivalent, or EIPA Written and Performance Test (minimum score 3.5).
  • Previous experience as an educational sign language interpreter preferred.
  • Understanding of K-12 educational environments and special education needs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and maintain professionalism.
