Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Stafford, Virginia

Make a difference in the educational experience of students who are deaf or hard of hearing by providing essential sign language interpretation in a collaborative school setting near Stafford, VA. As a contract Sign Language Interpreter, you’ll ensure students have full access to instruction and school activities, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.

What You’ll Do:

• Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, assemblies, field trips, and other assigned educational activities using American Sign Language (ASL)
• Facilitate clear and effective communication between students, staff, teachers, administrators, and peers
• Support students’ participation in the general education curriculum and campus life
• Work closely with classroom teachers, special education teams, and related service providers to meet student needs
• Adjust interpreting style to fit varying communication preferences and developmental levels
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and educational records
• Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and other school events requiring interpretation
• Provide input on communication barriers or needs that affect student access to instruction
• Adhere to school district policies and uphold the highest professional standards

Your Qualifications:

• Proficiency in ASL and recognized sign language interpreting skills
• VQAS Level III certification, equivalent Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing qualification, or an EIPA score of at least 3.5 on the Performance Test, as required
• Experience providing interpreting services in K-12 educational settings preferred
• Understanding of the needs of students with hearing loss
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work with discretion and professionalism in a school environment
• High school diploma or GED required; further education or interpreter training preferred

Preferred Background:

• Past experience as an educational sign language interpreter
• Familiarity with IEPs and special education terminology
• Experience supporting a diverse student population alongside educators and related service providers
