Clerk of Works - Building & M&E Compliance
\nCarbon60 is looking to recruit an experienced Clerk of Works – Building & M&E Compliance to provide independent technical oversight of contractor works across a major building project in London, ensuring works are completed safely, compliantly, and to the highest quality standards.
\nROLE: Clerk of Works – Building & M&E Compliance
\nPAY RATE: £300 per day
\nCONTRACT TYPE: 3 Months (Potential extension)
\nWORKING HOURS:
\nMonday to Friday – Night Shifts (Out of Hours)
\nTypical working hours: 5:00pm – 3:00am
\nOccasional weekend working may be required to support critical programme activities
\n37.5 hours per week
\nLOCATION: Highbury Corner Magistrates Court, Highbury, London N7 8JA
\nTHE ROLE:
\nThe successful candidate will provide independent, technically focused oversight of contractor activities across the project, ensuring all works are delivered in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, statutory regulations, and project requirements.
\nActing as the client's on-site representative, you will monitor quality, safety, compliance, and programme performance while supporting the Project Manager by identifying risks, resolving issues where possible, and maintaining clear, evidence-based reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
\nA mechanical engineering background is highly preferred, and applicants should have strong experience overseeing complex building services or construction projects.
\nKEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
\nProvide independent on-site inspection and technical oversight of contractor works
\nEnsure all works comply with approved drawings, specifications, standards, and statutory requirements
\nMonitor workmanship, material quality, and compliance throughout the project
\nIdentify and challenge non-compliant work, ensuring corrective actions are implemented
\nSupport the Project Manager by identifying project risks, defects, delays, and technical issues
\nReview contractor performance against programme milestones and approved project plans
\nProduce accurate, evidence-based inspection reports and compliance documentation
\nVerify compliance with change control procedures and approved project scope
\nWork within live operational environments while ensuring minimal disruption to site activities
\nBuild effective relationships with contractors, consultants, designers, and project stakeholders
\nHEALTH, SAFETY & COMPLIANCE:
\nEnsure compliance with CDM Regulations and construction legislation
\nVerify Principal Contractor and Principal Designer responsibilities are being fulfilled
\nCarry out and document temporary works inspections
\nReview RAMS, permits, isolations, and access arrangements before works commence
\nPromote a strong health and safety culture across site activities
\nSupport incident, accident, and near-miss investigations where required
\nEnsure high standards of housekeeping, safety, and SHEQ compliance are maintained
\nESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
\nPrevious experience as a Clerk of Works, Site Inspector, Building Services Inspector, or similar technical quality assurance role
\nStrong understanding of building services, construction quality, and compliance requirements
\nExperience monitoring contractor performance on live construction projects
\nExcellent knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, and technical standards
\nStrong understanding of CDM Regulations and Health & Safety legislation
\nExcellent reporting, communication, and stakeholder management skills
\nAbility to identify technical issues and challenge non-compliant works confidently
\nComfortable working night shifts and within operational environments
\nDESIRABLE:
\nMechanical engineering background (highly preferred)
\nExperience working on public sector, commercial, or large infrastructure projects
\nKnowledge of building compliance, commissioning, and project assurance processes
\nExperience producing evidence-based quality and compliance reports
