Survey Engineer (Rail)

Location: Hybrid – a mix of site, office and home working (Various locations across UK - Swindon, Cardiff, Birmingham, York

Travel: Business expenses and hire car provided for work-related travel

We're looking for an experienced Survey Engineer with a strong background in railway infrastructure surveys to join our growing team. If you enjoy working across a variety of rail projects and have the technical expertise to deliver high-quality survey solutions, we'd like to hear from you.

  • BPSS clearance
  • \n
  • PTS certification
  • \n
  • AC and DC competencies

What you'll be doing

\n

You'll play a key role in delivering accurate survey information to support major rail infrastructure projects by:

\n
    \n
  • Leading topographical and rail infrastructure surveys
  • \n
  • Setting up and maintaining survey control networks
  • \n
  • Managing GNSS survey control and coordinate transformations (including SnakeGrid)
  • \n
  • Processing and validating point cloud data
  • \n
  • Producing CAD drawings and survey deliverables
  • \n
  • Reviewing survey outputs to ensure quality and technical compliance
  • \n
  • Providing technical advice to project teams
  • \n
  • Working with third-party survey providers where required
  • \n
  • Helping improve survey methods, standards and best practice
  • \n

What we're looking for

\n

Essential:

\n
    \n
  • Significant experience in railway surveying
  • \n
  • Experience leading track and rail infrastructure surveys
  • \n
  • Strong knowledge of topographical surveying techniques
  • \n
  • Experience with GNSS control networks and SnakeGrid
  • \n
  • Point cloud processing and interpretation experience
  • \n
  • CAD and point cloud software skills
  • \n
  • Ability to review and assure survey outputs
  • \n
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • \n
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification
  • \n
  • Experience working to Network Rail standards
  • \n
\n

Desirable:

\n
    \n
  • Degree in Surveying or a related subject
  • \n
  • Chartered status (or working towards it)
  • \n
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CICES
  • \n
  • Experience on major rail enhancement or renewals projects
  • \n
  • Knowledge of railway safety and risk management
  • \n
  • Experience producing survey specifications or technical guidance
  • \n
