Head of Lab Operations

Amphiform
London, ENG, GB Full Time

Job Description

You’ll be the operational backbone of Amphiform’s UK lab, taking an empty room to a fully-functional ALD/MLD facility running production-grade nano-catalyst synthesis.

\n

Amphiform (amphiform.com) is building next-gen energy materials for AI data centres, defence and space: light, abundant and powerful. We achieve that by creating a new type of matter: hybrid materials, built atomic layer by atomic layer, where every atom has a pre-programmed purpose.

\n

We just closed a $5.5M pre-seed led by General Catalyst and Main Object, with Thomas Wolf (Hugging Face), Charlie Songhurst, and others. An Oxford physics professor who built the atomic manufacturing equipment we’re using is joining the team.

\n

What you’ll do

\n
    \n
  • Lead the buildout and commissioning of our Oxford lab, including ALD systems (Beneq TFS 200, Picosun R-200 and Arradiance units) and supporting equipment
  • \n
  • Establish SOPs, safety protocols, and quality systems for catalyst synthesis and characterisation
  • \n
  • Manage equipment suppliers, service contracts, and planning
  • \n
  • Lab budget and inventory
  • \n
\n

What we’re looking for

\n
    \n
  • Experience operating an academic or industrial research lab, ideally in materials or catalysis
  • \n
  • Hands-on experience with ALD, CVD, or related thin-film deposition techniques
  • \n
\n

Nice to have

\n
    \n
  • Background in fuel cells, electrolysis, or electrochemistry
  • \n
  • PhD in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering
  • \n
  • Prior startup experience
  • \n
