Job Description

Senior Assay Development Scientist / Consultant

\n

Cambridge | Permanent, Contract, Interim or Consultancy

\n

\n

We're supporting a well-funded biotech platform company developing a novel sequencing-based assay at the intersection of:

\n
    \n
  • RNA biology
  • \n
  • Nucleic acid chemistry
  • \n
  • Selection technologies
  • \n
  • NGS readouts
  • \n
  • Quantitative assay development
  • \n
\n

\n

This is a role for someone who enjoys digging into complex workflows and understanding exactly where signal is generated, amplified, distorted, or lost.

\n

\n

You'll be helping evaluate and strengthen a highly complex assay by:

\n
    \n
  • Identifying sources of bias and variability
  • \n
  • Understanding assay robustness and reproducibility
  • \n
  • Designing controls, standards and spike-ins
  • \n
  • Investigating PCR, sequencing and sampling effects
  • \n
  • Assessing enrichment and selection-based readouts
  • \n
  • Determining whether the final output truly reflects the underlying biology
  • \n
\n

\n

Ideal Background

\n

You'll likely bring experience in several of the following:

\n
    \n
  • Quantitative assay development
  • \n
  • RNA handling and RNA-based workflows
  • \n
  • NGS and sequencing-based assays
  • \n
  • Selection or screening platforms
  • \n
  • Nucleic acid chemistry
  • \n
  • Assay characterisation and validation
  • \n
  • Library-based experiments
  • \n
  • Primer, probe and RT assay design
  • \n
  • Controls, calibrants and reference standards
  • \n
  • PCR bias, normalisation and enrichment analysis
  • \n
\n

\n

The Person

\n

We're looking for someone who:

\n
    \n
  • Can challenge assumptions with data
  • \n
  • Thinks independently
  • \n
  • Enjoys troubleshooting difficult scientific problems
  • \n
  • Has taken methods from proof-of-concept through to robust, reproducible workflows
  • \n
  • Is comfortable providing clear technical recommendations
  • \n
\n

\n

Flexible Engagement

\n

The team is open-minded on structure and would consider:

\n
    \n
  • Permanent hires
  • \n
  • Contract scientists
  • \n
  • Independent consultants
  • \n
  • Technical audits
  • \n
  • Longer-term collaborations
