Pay: $30.87 per hour
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
Job Type: Full-time, 40 hours per week
Overtime: Available and paid at time-and-a-half

We are seeking an experienced HVAC/AC Mechanic to support facilities maintenance operations at the Central Alabama VA Medical Center.

This position will primarily be assigned to the Montgomery campus at 215 Perry Hill Road, Montgomery, AL. Employees may occasionally be required to assist at the Tuskegee campus at 2400 Hospital Road, Tuskegee, AL, depending on facility needs.

This role supports a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility under a federal services contract. You will help maintain the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems that keep patient-care areas safe, comfortable, and fully operational for Veterans, employees, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
  • Change filters, clean coils, lubricate equipment, and check overall system performance
  • Inspect HVAC equipment for wear, efficiency, reliability, and potential safety concerns
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical HVAC malfunctions
  • Replace motors, compressors, thermostats, controls, and other system components as needed
  • Monitor and adjust central air-conditioning systems to maintain proper environmental conditions
  • Support temperature, ventilation, humidity, and indoor-air-quality requirements in patient-care areas
  • Troubleshoot issues involving airflow, cooling, heating, refrigeration, and system controls
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance with other facility staff and hospital departments
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance
  • Safely use HVAC tools, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and power tools
  • Follow all federal, facility, environmental, and workplace safety procedures

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of documented and verifiable HVAC, air-conditioning, refrigeration, or related mechanical trade experience
  • Experience maintaining and repairing commercial or industrial HVAC systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical repair skills
  • Current resume detailing relevant trade experience is required
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to occasionally work at either the Montgomery or Tuskegee campus
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation
  • Ability to obtain a VA facility identification badge before beginning work
  • Willingness to complete OSHA 30-Hour Construction training if not already certified; training will be provided by the contractor

Relevant HVAC licenses, EPA certifications, OSHA credentials, or trade certifications are strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds
  • Stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in various positions for extended periods
  • Climb ladders and work at elevated heights
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Work indoors and outdoors in temperatures exceeding 100°F
  • Work in noisy environments and wear hearing protection when required
  • Wear an OSHA-approved respirator and successfully complete a respirator fit test when required
  • Safely handle tools, equipment, motors, compressors, filters, and HVAC components

Employees are responsible for providing and wearing OSHA-approved steel-toed work boots. Hearing protection, eye protection, and an approved face mask must also be worn when required. Cloth masks are not permitted for applicable work activities.

Work Environment

This is a smoke-free federal medical campus, including e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Weapons are prohibited. Photography, video recording, and audio recording are strictly prohibited on VA property.

Employees must wear visible facility identification at all times while on-site and comply with all VA security, safety, and access requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $30.87 per hour
