Maintenance Electrician – VA Medical Center

Location: Montgomery, AL, with occasional travel to Tuskegee, AL
Pay: $31.44 per hour
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
Job Type: Full-time, 40 hours per week
Overtime: Available and paid at time-and-a-half

We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Electrician to support facilities maintenance operations at the Central Alabama VA Medical Center.

This position will primarily be assigned to the Montgomery campus at 215 Perry Hill Road, Montgomery, AL. Employees may occasionally be required to assist at the Tuskegee campus at 2400 Hospital Road, Tuskegee, AL, based on facility needs.

This role supports a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility under a federal services contract. The Maintenance Electrician will help ensure that electrical and life-safety systems remain safe, reliable, and fully operational for the Veterans, employees, and visitors who rely on the facility each day.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, and repair new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and related equipment
• Install secondary power distribution lines and circuits across a variety of voltages
• Maintain industrial multiphase electrical systems
• Service thermocouple sensors, intrusion alarms, fire alarm systems, emergency warning systems, and lightning protection systems
• Trace, diagnose, and repair difficult-to-locate electrical defects
• Determine the proper placement of distribution panels, boxes, fittings, connections, and wiring
• Install wiring in raceways, conduits, and cable trays
• Calculate resistance, inductance, capacitance, power factor, current flow, and temperature
• Apply electrical trade formulas to determine voltage, voltage drop, and current capacity
• Operate diagnostic and testing equipment, including signal generators, signal tracers, and oscilloscopes
• Use voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters, ohmmeters, meggers, and other electrical testing instruments
• Follow all federal, facility, electrical, and workplace safety procedures

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of documented and verifiable electrician or electrical maintenance experience
• Strong experience troubleshooting, repairing, and installing commercial or industrial electrical systems
• Experience working with multiphase systems and electrical testing equipment
• Current resume detailing relevant trade experience is required
• Reliable transportation and the ability to occasionally work at either the Montgomery or Tuskegee campus
• Ability to pass a federal background investigation
• Ability to obtain a VA facility identification badge before beginning work
• Willingness to complete OSHA 30-Hour Construction training if not already certified; training will be provided by the contractor

Relevant electrical licenses, certifications, OSHA credentials, or trade certifications are strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

• Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds
• Stand, bend, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods
• Climb ladders and work at elevated heights
• Work in confined spaces
• Work indoors and outdoors in temperatures exceeding 100°F
• Work in noisy environments and wear hearing protection when required
• Wear an OSHA-approved respirator and successfully complete a respirator fit test when required
• Safely use electrical tools, hand tools, power tools, ladders, and testing equipment

Employees are responsible for providing and wearing OSHA-approved steel-toed work boots. Hearing protection, eye protection, and an approved face mask must also be worn when required. Cloth masks are not permitted for applicable work activities.

Work Environment

This is a smoke-free federal medical campus, including e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Weapons are prohibited. Photography, video recording, and audio recording are strictly prohibited on VA property.

Employees must wear visible facility identification at all times while on-site and comply with all VA security, safety, and access requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

• $31.44 per hour
