Location: Remote (UK) with initial onboarding in the South East (approximately 2 days per week for the first 2 months)

Lead a growing software engineering team\nWe're recruiting on behalf of a growing UK software company looking to appoint a hands-on Head of Development to lead a team of six developers.
\nThis is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technical leader who enjoys improving engineering processes, mentoring developers and remaining involved in technical decision-making. You'll play a key role in shaping the software development function while working closely with Product, Support and Professional Services teams.
The Role\nAs Head of Development, you'll lead the engineering team while introducing structured development practices that improve software quality, delivery and accountability.
\nThis is a hands-on leadership position rather than a purely managerial role. Alongside leading the team, you'll provide technical guidance, support architectural decisions and help resolve complex technical challenges when required.
Key Responsibilities\n- \n
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of six software developers. \n
- Assess and improve the current software development lifecycle. \n
- Introduce and embed effective SDLC, Agile and DevOps practices. \n
- Improve backlog management, estimation and release planning. \n
- Establish engineering standards, ownership, metrics and reporting. \n
- Improve software quality and reduce technical debt. \n
- Support software architecture and technical decision-making. \n
- Work collaboratively with Product, Support and Professional Services teams. \n
- Help prioritise customer-impacting issues and delivery objectives. \n
- Communicate confidently with internal stakeholders and customers where required. \n
You'll be an experienced software development leader with a background in SaaS or enterprise software who enjoys improving teams, processes and technology.
\nYou'll ideally have experience with:
\n- \n
- Leading software development teams. \n
- SDLC, Agile and DevOps methodologies. \n
- Software architecture, testing and release management. \n
- Engineering governance and delivery improvement. \n
- Remaining technically involved while leading a team. \n
- Building strong relationships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. \n
Exposure to some or all of the following would be advantageous:

- Azure \n
- Modern web technologies \n
- Modernising legacy applications \n
- Legal technology or other regulated software environments \n
- Working with external development partners \n

- Lead and shape the engineering function within a growing software business. \n
- Make a genuine impact on engineering standards, delivery and technical strategy. \n
- Manage and develop a talented team of developers. \n
- Predominantly remote working following the initial onboarding period. \n
- Join a collaborative environment where your ideas and leadership will influence the future direction of the business. \n
- Work on established software products with an international customer base. \n
