Job Description
Senior Underwriter
\nLondon · Full-time, Permanent, Hybrid
\n\nAbout the role
\nA fast-growing, FCA-regulated digital lender is reshaping how UK consumers access credit — and is looking for an experienced Senior Underwriter to make an immediate impact. The technology is evolving quickly, the business is scaling, and this is a role where your judgement genuinely matters.
\nIf you enjoy owning decisions, working autonomously and using your expertise to improve outcomes for customers, this is a role where your experience will count from day one.
\nWhat you’ll do
\nReporting to the Head of Underwriting, you’ll:
\n- \n
- Approve or decline referred applications for unsecured personal loans. \n
- Assess affordability and creditworthiness using bureau data, Open Banking data and customer documentation. \n
- Identify and investigate fraud risk and data anomalies. \n
- Apply FCA rules and lending policy consistently. \n
- Document clear, well-evidenced rationale that supports the audit trail and stands up to QA. \n
- Work at pace while maintaining quality and help shape how underwriting develops in a technology-led environment. \n
- Share insights with Credit Risk to help refine policy and improve automation. \n
What you’ll bring
\n- \n
- 7–10 years in unsecured personal loans, with a proven record of strong, independent credit judgement. \n
- Sharp analytical and problem-solving skills, with the precision and judgement to resolve complex, borderline cases with confidence. \n
- Deep, hands-on expertise in affordability under FCA rules, including complex and non-standard cases. \n
- Advanced skill interpreting bureau and Open Banking data — including the subtle risk and fraud signals others can miss. \n
- Strong, applied command of the UK regulatory framework (CONC, Consumer Duty). \n
- Experience operating at higher mandate and authority levels, accountable for finely balanced, higher-value decisions. \n
- A natural point of reference on difficult cases, able to support colleagues and raise the standard of underwriting. \n
The kind of person you are
\n- \n
- Analytical, precise and decisive under pressure — comfortable owning difficult calls and being accountable for them. \n
- Clear and concise on paper, with rationale that stands up to QA, audit and regulatory scrutiny. \n
- Fully autonomous and well-organised, trusted to manage your own caseload and priorities without oversight. \n
- High-integrity and customer-focused, doing the right thing even when it’s the harder path — and setting that standard for others. \n
- Driven by real impact and ownership, and at home in a fast-moving, technology-driven environment where you can help shape how underwriting works. \n
