HR & Payroll Manager

Location: Croydon area Salary: circa £45k (dependent on experience) Hours: Full-time Working Pattern: Primarily office-based with occasional flexibility

About the Role

\n

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised HR & Payroll professional to take ownership of people and payroll functions for a client of ours. This is a standalone role requiring a confident individual who can manage payroll and Reward aspects accurately, provide comprehensive HR support, and act as a visible and trusted point of contact across the business. The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work independently while building effective relationships throughout the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll

\n
    \n
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing for all employees.
  • \n
  • Ensure payroll is completed accurately and on time.
  • \n
  • Maintain payroll records and employee data.
  • \n
  • Process salary changes, pensions, benefits, statutory payments, and deductions.
  • \n
  • Liaise with external payroll providers where required.
  • \n
  • Ensure compliance with relevant payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
  • \n
  • Investigate and resolve payroll queries efficiently and professionally.
  • \n

Human Resources

\n
    \n
  • Provide generalist HR support across the employee lifecycle.
  • \n
  • Manage onboarding and offboarding processes.
  • \n
  • Maintain accurate HR records and personnel files.
  • \n
  • Support recruitment and selection activities.
  • \n
  • Assist managers with employee relations matters including absence management, disciplinary and grievance processes.
  • \n
  • Coordinate training and development administration.
  • \n
  • Produce HR reports and management information when required.
  • \n
  • Ensure HR policies and procedures remain up to date and compliant with employment legislation.
  • \n

Administration & Organisation

  • Manage and prioritise a varied workload effectively.
  • \n
  • Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive employee information.
  • \n
  • Drive improvements in HR and payroll processes and systems.
  • \n
  • Ensure accurate record keeping and documentation.
  • \n
  • Act as a visible and approachable HR presence within the business.
  • \n

Skills & Experience Required

\n

Essential

\n
    \n
  • Proven experience within both HR and payroll functions.
  • \n
  • Sound knowledge of UK payroll processes and legislation.
  • \n
  • Strong HR generalist experience.
  • \n
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • \n
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • \n
  • Experience using HR and payroll systems.
  • \n
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • \n
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • \n
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • \n
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • \n

Desirable

  • CIPD qualification (Level 3 or above).
  • \n
  • Experience in a standalone HR role.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of employment law and best practice HR procedures.
  • \n
  • Experience implementing process improvements or HR systems.
  • \n
