Precision Custom Components (PCC) is seeking a skilled Welding Department Manager (1stshift) to join our team. This is an on-site position reporting to our manufacturing facility in York, PA.

The 1st Shift Weld Department Manager is responsible for leading the daily operations of the Weld Department and Weld Lab while ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of all manufacturing activities. This role provides leadership to supervisors and hourly personnel in a union manufacturing environment, promotes a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, and partners with cross-functional teams to meet production, quality, and delivery objectives.

The ideal candidate is a servant leader who develops people, builds strong labor-management relationships, and drives operational excellence through collaboration, coaching, and disciplined execution.

Essential Duties of the Welding Manager:

Leadership & People Development

  • Lead the daily operations of the 1st shift Weld Department and provide strategic oversight of the Weld Lab.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop department supervisors and hourly employees through compassionate leadership, integrity, accountability, clear communication, and self-discipline.
  • Foster a positive, respectful labor-management relationship while ensuring compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Promote employee engagement, teamwork, and continuous learning throughout the department.
  • Identify employee development opportunities and coordinate technical training through the Weld Lab as needed.

Operations Management

  • Direct daily production activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and within established schedules.
  • Coordinate with other department supervisors and shift managers to effectively plan, prioritize, and execute manufacturing activities.
  • Monitor production progress, labor hours, and departmental performance while ensuring accurate shift-to-shift communication.
  • Maintain awareness of production schedules and proactively address issues that may impact delivery commitments.
  • Ensure proper staffing and resource allocation to support manufacturing requirements.

Quality & Technical Oversight

  • Partner with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Program Management to resolve welding-related issues and improve first time quality.
  • Verify the quality of work in progress and completed work to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Assist employees in interpreting work instructions, engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation.
  • Monitor and maintain welder qualifications and certifications while coordinating qualification testing through the Weld Lab.
  • Support root cause investigations and implement corrective actions to reduce defects and rework.

Weld Lab Oversight

  • Provide leadership and oversight for the Weld Lab to ensure effective support of production operations.
  • Coordinate welding procedure qualifications, welder qualification testing, and technical training activities.
  • Ensure welding processes, procedures, and training programs remain current and support operational requirements.
  • Collaborate with Welding Engineering and technical personnel to implement process improvements and new technologies.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote a culture where safety is the highest priority.
  • Enforce company safety policies, OSHA regulations, welding safety practices, and departmental procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, quality requirements, and applicable labor contract provisions.
  • Conduct safety observations, address hazards promptly, and support incident investigations when necessary.

Equipment & Resource Management

  • Monitor welding equipment to ensure operational readiness and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs with Maintenance and the Weld Lab.
  • Assist in evaluating and procuring welding equipment, tooling, and other manufacturing resources to support production demands.
  • Manage the inventory, issuance, and accountability of company-provided equipment.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead initiatives focused on improving productivity, reducing scrap and rework, and increasing operational efficiency.
  • Utilize performance metrics to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support lean manufacturing initiatives and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Drive improvements that contribute to meeting safety, quality, cost, and on-time delivery objectives.

Education/Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, GED, or trade school diploma required. Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Welding Technology preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in welding large, heavy components in a job shop environment.
  • 5+ years of related supervisory experience.
  • Excellent computer skills required. A general knowledge of ERP Systems and Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of Weld Department training practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership skills to plan, organize, coordinate, and direct supervisors and workers in accordance with the overall manufacturing plan.
  • Experience working with a union workforce preferred.
