Work Schedule

This position operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and it requires onsite presence.

Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Medical Physicist, the Associate Physicist is responsible for ensuring high-quality care in the use of radiation sources and imaging equipment. This role also involves protecting patients and staff from radiation exposure within the Radiation Oncology Department. Key responsibilities include overseeing the functionality of radiation therapy equipment, ensuring radiation safety, and managing operational aspects of our facilities. The Associate Physicist will calibrate all radiation therapy devices, conduct routine quality control checks, assist in treatment planning, recommend safety procedures, and educate staff on radiation protection practices.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Daily Duties (60%):
    • Collaborate with other physics staff to manage general medical physics tasks related to radiation therapy.
    • Verify that each treatment plan is reviewed and/or IMRT QA is completed prior to the first treatment session.
    • Conduct weekly reviews of patient charts to ensure quality assurance in treatment.
    • Perform routine or specialized dosimetry checks on treatment plan parameters.
    • Review technical and scientific data from simulation to treatment to ensure accuracy.
    • Design and create specialized equipment, including immobilization devices and compensating filters.
    • Check treatment charts for any mathematical errors or prescription modifications.
    • Provide consultations to ensure accurate radiation dose delivery.
    • Confirm the proper operation and safety of all radiation-producing machines according to established protocols.
    • Maintain and establish protocols for accurate patient dosimetry.
    • Adhere to all radiation safety standards and regulations to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
    • Document and maintain accurate records.
    • Participate in ongoing protocol studies, ensuring correct data collection and documentation.
    • Assist the Radiation Safety Officer with the Radiation Safety Program.
    • Support the efficient workflow of the department by performing additional tasks as assigned by the Radiation Oncology Manager.
  • Quality Assurance (30%):
    • Conduct routine checks on radiation therapy equipment following AAPM guidelines.
    • Perform VMAT/IMRT QA on all relevant plans.
    • Execute daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly checks on all radiation delivery machines.
    • Assist the Chief Physicist during annual machine quality assurance checks.
    • Conduct machine QA following any component changes.
    • Collaborate with field service engineers to ensure compliance after service events.
  • Staff Training and Education (10%):
    • Provide education to staff and physicians regarding radiation safety protocols.
    • Train personnel on the care of brachytherapy patients.
    • Stay updated with continuing education credits necessary for certification maintenance.
Job Qualifications
  • Required Minimum Education: Ph.D. with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the field.
  • Required Minimum Experience: At least 2 years of experience in Radiation Therapy, which may include residency experience.
  • Required Minimum Skills:
    • Familiarity with various concepts, practices, and procedures in the field, relying on extensive experience and judgment to achieve goals.
    • Creativity and independence in daily tasks are essential.
    • Strong communication skills in both verbal and written English, along with a positive attitude.
  • Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): Medical Physicist ABR certification must be obtained within 120 days.
