Job OverviewThis position involves supporting nursing and surgical teams with direct patient care tasks. The Surgical Technician is responsible for providing technical assistance within the operating room environment, as well as planning and assessing the care delivered.
QualificationsRequired:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an OR Technician training program or similar
- At least 1 year of relevant experience
- Certification as a Surgical Technician from the Association of Surgical Technologists, NBSTSA
- Current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification from the American Heart Association
- Monday to Friday

- Facilitates high-quality patient care by utilizing technical skills effectively.
- Performs duties related to scrub personnel, ensuring a smooth and efficient response to all situations, while assisting with departmental tasks as needed.
- Engages in educational activities for staff, patients, and families, based on personal knowledge.
- Contributes to unit performance improvement initiatives.
- Utilizes knowledge of surgical asepsis when preparing and opening sterile packs, instruments, and supplies; checks package integrity and chemical indicators visually.
- Supports the Circulator by verifying cases, gathering necessary supplies and equipment, and ensuring their proper functioning.
- Works collaboratively with the Operating Room team, executing technical duties in a professional manner.
- Communicates important information through verbal and written reports, including surgeon requests, changes in preferences, and patient care concerns.
- Ensures patient safety by implementing preventive measures and adhering to hospital and departmental policies.
- Manages the collection, identification, and delivery of specimens in accordance with OR policies.
- Follows the Universal Protocol for correct side/site/patient identification.
- Possesses knowledge of organizational policies and AORN recommended practices for high-level disinfection and sterilization.
- Monitors the surgical team's aseptic technique, identifying and correcting any breaches in sterility.
- Participates in the development and promotion of new policies and procedures, actively seeking improvements in patient care and departmental operations.
- Conducts needle, sponge, and instrument counts as per hospital policy, utilizing inventory sheets when necessary.
- Executes scrubbing, gloving, and draping techniques as outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual, maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
- Mentors and assists new and existing staff members and students in their education and orientation, demonstrating proficiency across all surgical specialties.
- Prepares and aids in the application of sterile surgical dressings, immobilizers, and casts as directed by the surgeon.
- Reports the number and location of drains, implants, and grafts inserted during surgery, ensuring the Circulator has all necessary documentation for the OR Record.
- Sets up the back table and Mayo stand according to policy, providing surgical instruments and supplies to the surgical team while keeping their focus on the operative field.
- Takes initiative in room turnover, restocking supplies, and returning equipment to designated storage areas post-surgery.
