This role focuses on telecoms design engineering to support a major infrastructure refresh project, transitioning legacy controlled telephony systems to modern telecommunications solutions. You will produce high-quality engineering design documentation, including drawing packs, schematics, and low-level design (LLD) deliverables, for critical infrastructure environments such as rail, oil and gas, and industrial sectors. The position is primarily remote and requires strong telecoms design experience, proficiency with CAD tools, and a solid understanding of transmission and networking technologies.

\n

Responsibilities

\n
    \n
  • Design and document modern telecommunications solutions to replace legacy controlled telephony systems as part of a major infrastructure refresh project.
  • \n
  • Produce comprehensive engineering design documentation, including detailed drawing packs, schematics, and low-level design (LLD) deliverables.
  • \n
  • Use CAD software and telecom network drawing tools to create accurate and clear technical diagrams and schematics.
  • \n
  • Develop and maintain low-level designs that align with technical requirements and project standards.
  • \n
  • Ensure that designs support reliable communication across critical infrastructure environments such as rail, oil and gas, and industrial sectors.
  • \n
  • Apply knowledge of controlled telephony systems to design solutions that integrate effectively with existing and new technologies.
  • \n
  • Incorporate transmission and networking technologies, including MPLS, SDH, and optical transmission networks, into design solutions.
  • \n
  • Interpret technical requirements and convert them into detailed engineering documentation that can be used by implementation and operations teams.
  • \n
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to clarify requirements, resolve design queries, and ensure that designs meet functional and operational needs.
  • \n
  • Support network refresh activities by designing solutions that enable different systems and technologies to communicate effectively.
  • \n

  • Proven experience as a Telecom Design Engineer or in a similar telecoms design role.
  • \n
  • Strong expertise in producing engineering drawings, schematics, and complete design packs.
  • \n
  • experience in developing low-level designs (LLDs) for telecommunications networks.
  • \n
  • Proficiency with CAD software for creating technical drawings and schematics.
  • \n
  • experience using telecom network drawing tools, including Visio, for detailed schematics.
  • \n
  • Good understanding of controlled telephony systems and associated technologies.
  • \n
  • experience working with telecom transmission and networking technologies, including MPLS.
  • \n
  • experience with SDH-based transmission systems.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of optical transmission networks, such as Optel or similar optical telecom environments.
  • \n
  • Ability to interpret complex technical requirements and convert them into detailed engineering documentation.
  • \n
  • Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to present and explain design decisions clearly.
  • \n
\n

Additional Skills & Qualifications

\n
    \n
  • experience producing drawing packs and low-level designs in critical infrastructure sectors such as rail, oil and gas, and industrial environments.
  • \n
  • Background in voice and trackside systems within rail or similar industries.
  • \n
  • Cross-over skillset spanning SDH and MPLS/STP technologies to support network refresh projects.
  • \n
  • experience working on projects that involve refreshing or modernising telecommunications networks.
  • \n
  • Familiarity with controlled telephony environments and their integration into broader telecom networks.
