Position Overview

The Respiratory Therapist II plays a crucial role in administering medications and providing respiratory care, leveraging their extensive knowledge and experience through an evaluate-and-treat approach. This position involves delivering care to patients with complex health issues, primarily in critical care settings, where independent decision-making and self-direction are essential. In addition to direct patient care, the RT II is responsible for educating patients and their families, coordinating activities, fostering staff development, and engaging in professional growth. Understanding the specific needs of diverse populations is vital, as the RT II addresses biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational needs of patients and their families. This role also includes mentoring new employees and students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service:
    • Complete patient care, documentation, and education.
    • Foster a collaborative team environment.
    • Encourage a positive workplace atmosphere.
    • Support students and staff in their learning.
  • Quality Patient Care:
    • Conduct patient assessments and therapy evaluations.
    • Collaborate with healthcare team members to plan patient care.
    • Verify orders and administer aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene, volume expansion, oxygen, and medical gas therapies.
    • Manage ventilators, wean patients, and interpret waveforms; perform airway management tasks (intubation, extubation, tracheostomy care).
    • Conduct arterial blood gas sampling and analysis.
    • Educate patients and mentor new employees, students, and peers.
    • Assist with location-specific invasive and non-invasive procedures, cardiac services, and pulmonary diagnostic testing.
  • Safe and Quality Environment:
    • Ensure accurate electronic orders, charting, and billing.
    • Promote high standards of patient safety (Medication Safety, NPSG, etc.).
    • Engage in performance improvement initiatives to enhance quality care.
    • Support evidence-based practices.
    • Review updated and new departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned while adhering to all organizational policies, work standards, and codes of conduct.
QualificationsEducation
  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy (preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
  • All certifications must be obtained upon hire unless specified otherwise:
  • NBRC-RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • RCP - Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or equivalent certifications
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or equivalent certifications
Experience
  • 0-2 years of clinical experience, with a minimum of 6 months in critical care required.
Skills
  • Strong communication and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with physicians and healthcare professionals.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including familiarity with databases.
  • Excellent customer relations, assessment, and communication skills are essential.
